Leelanau County has the state’s highest median home values, followed by Washtenaw, Livingston, Oakland and Grand Traverse counties, based on the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Census released its estimates of median home values and median property tax bills in December 2019 as part of its five-year estimates for 2014-18.

Below is a list of the 75 Michigan cities and townships with the highest median home values, based on the Census data.

But first, here’s an online database that allows readers to look up the numbers for any Michigan city or township. If you search by county without specifying a community, you can see the cities and townships ranked by median home value.

Median house values and property taxes for 2014-18

A few caveats about the numbers:

  • These are estimates based on Census surveys and have a margin of error that grows as community size gets smaller.
  • The estimates are for 2014-18, with the 2014-17 numbers have been adjusted for inflation. Because real estate values were rebounding from the recession during that time, the median market value is likely higher now. (For instance, the Census estimates that Michigan’s statewide median was $146,200 for 2014-18, compared to $162,500 for just 2018.)
  • The numbers include condominiums and mobile homes as well as detached houses.

As Michigan real estate values rebound, property values lag
