DAILY DIGEST: Waverly boys soccer defeats Portsmouth West 6-1; Unioto volleyball wins

Boys soccer

Waverly 6, Portsmouth West 1

Grayson Diener recorded three goals and one assist for the Tigers while Elijah McCain scored one goal. Caleb Medukas also scored a goal for Waverly while Britton Kritzwiser had two assists.

“It feels pretty good to start off 2-0,” Diener said. “Scoring three goals tonight really builds confidence. I got some guys that can play me the ball. Got a lot of help up front with Elijah McCain, got a good midfield with Britton, and our defense is pretty solid this year with Drake Teeters holding it back back there with Alex Workman.”

Waverly (2-0) travels to South Webster at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Unioto 4, Hillsboro 1

Vijay Wangui and Joe Lafreniere each scored two goals for Unioto while Asher McBee and Cameron DeBoard each recorded an assist.

Unioto (2-0) hosts Hilliard Bradley at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Volleyball 

Unioto 3, Logan Elm 0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-16) 

Ava Eldridge had 28 assists in the match while Hallie Pinkerton recorded 17 digs. Amber Cottrill added 15 digs while Kacey Pierce had 12 kills. Cottrill, Carissa Wheeler, and Cree Stulley each had seven kills while Pinkerton, Cottrill, and Wheeler each had three aces. 

Unioto (1-0) travels to Chillicothe at 6 p.m. on Thursday. 

Vinton County 3, Southeastern 0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-11)

Skylar Hice had five kills, 13 digs, and three aces for Southeastern while Audrey Scott and Alexis Bailes each had four kills. Hannah Lougheed had three kills, 13 digs, and seven assists while Ally Skeens had six digs and two aces. Ameris Cooper had nine assists for the Panthers.

Southeastern (0-1) hosts Washington at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Jackson 3, Piketon 1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-20, 25-21)

Maddy Scott recorded 20 assist, seven kills, eight aces, and five digs for the Redstreaks while Ava Little had seven kills, five assists and six digs. Jordan Sharp had eight kills and seven assists while Macy McDowell had 16 digs.

Piketon (0-1) hosts Green on Thursday.

Girls soccer 

Waverly 6, Portsmouth West 0 

The second half was cancelled due lightning. 

Amelia Willis scored 3 goals for the Tigers while Loren Moran scored two goals. Michaela Rhoads added one goal. Kylie Smith had two assists in the game while Moran had one.

“(Assistant coach) Danielle [Morgan] and I were proud of the way we played tonight,” said Waverly head coach Chris Murphy.  “Our organization was better tonight, and our shots were not going high … Danielle and I would like to compliment the lady Senators on their performance. Coach [Tom] Hoggard is training young athletes that have minimal experience or this is the first time they have played. Hoggard is doing a nice job of coaching up his team. We look forward to seeing them and their progress next round.”

Waverly (2-0) travels to Ironton St. Joseph at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. 

Girls tennis

Chillicothe 5, Hillsboro 0

Chillicothe’s Abbey Sims-Clark defeated Miriam Studebaker in two sets (6-0, 6-0) while Natalie Drotleff defeated Alexia Nicholas in two sets (6-0, 6-0). Sydney Wissler also won her match over Cardine Crouch.

In doubles, Ali Grossman and Maddie Schafer defeated Stephanie Patton and Haley Norman in two sets (6-1, 6-2) while Asia Penn and Liliauna Carver defeated Sara Newsome and Abigail Koogler in two sets (6-0, 6-0).

Chillicothe (3-1) hosts Washington at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday after traveling to Vinton County at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
