5 Things To Do This Weekend, Including Boston Design Week And Art In Bloom

I’ve walked by the many interesting buildings on MIT’s campus countless times, and each time I pass by, I can’t help but wonder how each was planned and if there will be more buildings like them. They are so creative that it makes me wonder how the buildings were constructed and how they look on the inside. With spring here, it means I’ll probably start walking around there again on sunny days and after attending the MIT Campus Art and Landscape Virtual Tour at Boston Design Week, I think I’ll gain a deeper appreciation for these buildings. This week, I have compiled a list that brings together so many different interests — from the aforementioned design week to a program for kids, an online conversation about a coming-of-age memoir to a virtual journey through beauty standards.

Throughout the 8th annual Design Week, there are self-guided walks, talks about landscapes and murals, and explorations of books and photographs. Attendees can go on self-guided tours of Mount Auburn Cemetery, public art in the Seaport and the urban playground Underground at Ink Block, located under the highway between the South End and South Boston. The ultimate goal of design week is to increase public awareness of all the aspects surrounding design and to acknowledge all the roles that design plays in our everyday lives. Events will take place both online and outdoors — be sure to register in advance.

Streaming live from the Museum of Science, ReRooted is a virtual production curated by artists Ana Masacote and Yvette Modestin exploring the context of the debate surrounding natural hair. The artists will guide viewers through current beauty standards and analyze the importance of hair beyond just style for Black and Latinx communities. Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley will give an introduction. The program will be in English with Spanish subtitles.

This online conversation is part of the Boston Public Library’s Repairing America Series. Maria Hinojosa, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, will moderate the program with author Quiara Alegría Hudes who will discuss her new work, “My Broken Language: A Memoir,” a coming of age story that delves into the topics of home, memory and belonging. Hudes also explores growing up in Philadelphia with a Puerto Rican family that holds secrets.

MassArt Art Museum is hosting a virtual art and stories event with special guest Ekua Holmes.. The award-winning illustrator and artist will read her latest book, “Black is a Rainbow Color,” written by Angela Joy. After the event, there will be a small art making activity for kids between the ages of 3-5, guided by MAAM educator Julia Einstein.

Now in its 45th year, Art in Bloom is returning, albeit virtually. The event lets the audience choose from one of three virtual tours that take you through nine works of the MFA collection paired together with floral designs that are inspired by the artwork. The recordings are an hour long each. This is the perfect time to celebrate this pretty season of spring along with the importance of women, as every recording has to do with women in some sense.
