Update: Monona County body identified

The Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office has identified the body as 66-year-old Cheryl Stowe.

The investigation is ongoing by the Monona County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office, the Monona County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office.

The Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Mapleton Police Department, and Whiting Police Department helped with the initial investigation.

Investigators say there isn't any danger to the public.

Authorities are investigating a body found after a welfare check was performed in rural Castana for 66-year-old Cheryl Stowe on June 26.

Authorities say when they conducted the welfare check, Eliot Stowe, Cheryl's grandson was at the residence, but Cheryl was not. Eliot was arrested on an outstanding warrant for an unrelated manner.

Deputies from the Monona County Sheriff’s and the DNR later located a body on June 27 near Stowe's residence.

The body has been taken to the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

The investigation is ongoing by the Monona County Sheriff’s Office and they are being assisted by the Monona County Attorney’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DNR, Mapleton PD and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
