AKRON, Ohio - The Salvation Army in Summit County is making donating easier for those who rely more on cards than cash.
Those who donate via red kettles now have the option of using Apple Pay or Google Pay. The Salvation Army has smart chips and QR codes on kettles in Summit County, allowing for digital donations.
The non-profit organization said in a release that shoppers will be directed to a donation page that accepts Apple or Google payment options. Funds will be distributed based on the donor’s billing zip code, and an receipt will be emailed.
The kettles are in early use at Acme stores, and all kettle stands in the county will be equipped with the chip technology beginning Friday, Nov. 29, said Maj. Steven Stoops, Summit County Area coordinator and corps officer, in a release.
The non-profit rolled out card-reading kettles a few years ago, but this is the first time Summit County collections will use the technology.
