Things to do in Alabama over Memorial Day weekend 2020

What are your plans for Memorial Day weekend? Lots of us will be staying home this year, because of the coronavirus pandemic. But if you’ve been craving something other than a backyard barbecue, a Netflix marathon or a lazy day in a hammock, consider these events in Alabama.

LIVE MUSIC AT LULU’S GULF SHORES

Good to know: Social distancing guidelines listed on theater’s website and Facebook page: “Vehicles must be 10 feet apart. Customers must stay in vehicle! Please do not sit outside of your vehicle. You may leave the trunk of your SUV open and sit in the back or sit in a truck bed. When visiting concessions, follow the markings we have in place, and maintain 6 feet apart. This means everyone, including couples, only when visiting concessions. Only concessions available are popcorn, candy and drinks at this time. Restrooms will remain open. Just please remember to keep a safe distance.”

Soaring into summer  Alabama Jubilee kicks off Memorial Day weekend

ALABAMA JUBILEE HOT AIR BALLOON CLASSIC

What and where: Balloon pilots will launch from different locations throughout Decatur and Morgan County in non-competitive flights.

When: May 23 at 6:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Good to know: “We will NOT be glowing the balloons and we ask that all non-affiliated personnel NOT approach the balloons and observe all social distancing rules," the event’s website says. “We will be unable to provide tethered rides due to these restrictions. The festival’s usual car, tractor and arts and crafts shows will not take place this year, and no vendors will be available. No events will occur at Point Mallard."

SOUTHEASTERN OUTINGS CAHABA LILY WALK

What: Group goes on easy 5-mile hike at Hargrove Shoals in Bibb County.

When: May 23 at 9:45 a.m.

Where: Group leaves from McDonald’s near Riverchase Galleria, 1731 U.S. 31, Hoover.

Admission: Free.

Good to know: Social distancing guidelines are posted on the group’s website: “We ask our participants to maintain a reasonable social distance, usually 6 or more feet, between yourself and other people. We recognize that this may not always be possible, but we encourage you to keep some distance from others as much as possible. We encourage all our people coming on outings with us to drive from the meeting place to the outing start point in the same vehicle in which they arrived at the meeting place. Naturally if more than one person arrives at the meeting place in a given vehicle, then all the people in that vehicle may ride together in that same vehicle driving from the meeting place to the outing start point. One or two persons will be designated to sign everyone in so that clipboards and pens are not shared by everyone on the outing. In instances when we have more than 10 participants coming on an outing, we will split the group up into two parties of 10 or less people with two different leaders. Everyone will go to the same places during the outing, but we will want to reduce the number of people hiking together in the same group to less than 10. SIDEWALK STARLITE DRIVE-IN

What: Screening of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

When: May 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: REI location of The Summit shopping center, 335 Summit Blvd., Birmingham.

What: Dirt-track racing on quarter-mile oval.

When: May 25, gates open at 3 p.m., racing starts at 6 p.m.

Admission: General admission $10 adults, $5 children ages 6-11, free for kids age 5 and younger. Pit passes $25.
