NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Metro police said one person is in custody following a deadly stabbing in downtown Nashville on Friday afternoon.

Officers said one person was stabbed just before 3 p.m. on the 400 block of Sixth Avenue South.

58-year-old Mark Payne is charged with criminal homicide in the stabbing of a 65-year-old man. Payne and the victim were having an apparent ongoing dispute.

Witnesses told police Payne and the other man had a brief argument leading up to the stabbing. Payne dropped a knife as he ran away.

Officers responding to the scene took Payne into custody a short time later. The knife was also recovered.

The victim, having been stabbed in the neck, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for his injuries. He died there.

In February, the victim obtained warrants against Payne for an alleged assault and theft at Nashville Rescue Mission on Lafayette Street, where both of the men had been staying.

Efforts to identify the victim's next of kin continue.
