UPDATE: W.Va. schools work on changing calendars after teacher strike

Schools around our region are making plans to make up missed days due to the West Virginia teacher work stoppage.

Several schools in our area are either canceling spring break or extending the school year.

WSAZ is working to compile a list of each county in our area.

Kanawha County: They will not be making up days during spring break. Last day for students will be June 1. Teachers and staff will be done on June 8.

Putnam County: Students' last day will be Monday, June 4. Students will have class on spring break (April 2-6), but will be issued excused absences for any planned vacations. If no additional days are missed due to weather, the last day for students will be Monday, June 4. The last day for 200-day school staff will be Thursday, June 7.

Cabell County: Students' last day with be June 5. Several days in May and June have been added to the students' calendar. Attendance waivers for make-up days will be available and absences for pre-scheduled vacations, college visits, etc. will not count against students. June 6 will be a Preparation Day for staff. April 5 and 6, as well as June 7 and 8, will be teacher only make-up days (students should not report on those days.)

Nicholas County: Students' last day will be May 29. School staff will work spring break (April 2-6) but students will maintain their schedule.

Lincoln County: No official decision until the Board of Education meeting on March 20. They are considering adding some days to spring break and extending the year until June 7.

Boone County: Will be collecting data from parents through a survey. That will be presented at the March 19 board meeting.

Logan County: Will be discussing changes at their board meeting Thursday, March 8.

Wayne County: Students' last day will be June 21. Spring break will take place April 2-6 as originally scheduled. Teachers' last day of work is June 29, and 200-day employees will work June 22-29 to complete their contracts.

Mason County: No official decision until board meeting on Tuesday, March 13. They are considering adding days to the end of the school year without impacting spring break for students.

Jackson County: Students will use spring break as make-up days. They will also be adding some days onto the end of the school year; a final decision on those days has not been made. The board will vote on March 15.

Roane County: They will be using spring break days as instructional days.

Calhoun County: The superintendent has drafted a proposal to have class the first three days of spring break (March 26-28) and add on May 25, 29, 30 and 31. The Board of Education will vote on the proposal on March 12.

Mingo County: No official decision yet. Next board meeting is scheduled for March 20, but they may have a plan before the scheduled meeting.
