Two Sandusky County sheriff's deputies are no longer on paid leave after their involvement in the fatal shooting of a Fremont area man last weekend. Officials tell us that Deputy Jose Calvillo returned to work as a corrections officer at the county jail. They say his brother, Deputy Mario Calvillo, is on vacation right now and will be assigned to the jail when he returns from that break.
Today, there is an all you can eat pancake breakfast to benefit the Lake Township Relief Fund and Lake Township Firefighters Association. The cost of the meal is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Those who attend will also have the chance to enter a 50-50 raffle and there will be gifts for children. All proceeds benefit those affected by the storm. It starts at 7:00 a.m. and runs until noon at the Rossford fire station.
Officials, along with the rest of the nation, continue to monitor the situation at the bottom of the gulf. The flow of the oil is stopped for now, but it is possible the past three days will only be a brief reprieve. The government's point man on the spill, Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, says after testing is complete they will move ships in to hook up to the well and collect the oil. This does mean oil would once again spill temporarily into the water.
Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for one local church. Back in June of last year, a tragic early morning fire tore through the historic First Alliance church in Toledo. No one was hurt in the fire, but the building was destroyed. Today, a groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for construction of a new sanctuary. The new building will be built on the corner of 22nd and Monroe Street in Toledo.
An update to an accident involving a firefighter on the way to Clay Center. Officials say volunteer firefighter Timothy Johnson was rushing to the scene when he ran into Olivia Duty, 20, at an intersection. Duty was Life Flighted to UTMC where she remains in stable condition. Her passenger, 24 year old Ian Hoffman was killed in the accident. Johnson was also taken to UTMC and is currently listed in critical condition. The crash remains under investigation.
An escaped psychiatric patient is back in police custody. Police say Thomas Claybourne Senior busted a window and climbed out of the Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital on Detroit Avenue. Claybourne surrendered to police after spending nearly 24-hours on the loose.
Officials are issuing a water advisory for residents in Northwood. If your water service was affected by the water main break on Oregon Road, you should boil any water used for drinking. The advisory runs through tomorrow at 10:30 pm.
Police were on the scene of an early morning shooting just before 6 a.m. It happened in the 1300 block of Vance near Junction. Officials on scene tell 13abc that one man was shot in the foot and taken to an area hospital.
Officials are investigating a shooting from late last night. This one happened in the 1300 block of Brookview at the Swan Park apartments. Police tell 13abc two suspects approached the victim and tried to rob him, shot the man, and then fled. The victim was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Fire crews in Rossford were busy battling a blaze overnight in the 100 block of Birch Drive. Officials say that the fire started just after 10 last night at in an occupied house. The flames quickly spread causing damage to the home next door. Thankfully, no one was inside at the time but crews say that the owner's dog was killed in the fire.
Today, one local girl's wish is coming true. The Make A Wish Foundation granted Kaylee Halko's request to head down to Disney World in Florida. Kaylee suffers from progeria, a rare accelerated aging disease. She and her family leave this morning at 9:00 by limousine. Kaylee will have the opportunity to sing on stage with Belle from Beauty and the Beast.
The Ultimate Air Dogs return to Maumee this weekend. The pooches take flight at the Andersons. High flying dogs, including some local pups will run down a dock and compete for distance jumping into a 30,000 gallon pool. If you and your furry friend want to join in, it'll cost $15, which will go to Planned Pethood. The event is free for spectators.
