Man charged with first-degree murder in McDowell fatal shooting

HAVACO, WV (WCHS/WVAH) — McDowell County deputies said a man has been charged with first-degree murder after a fatal shooting.

Kenneth Joseph Brown Jr., 33, of Havaco was arrested after a shooting was reported about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday in Havaco near Welch, according to a news release from the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies found the shooting victim, Brian Lewis, 38, of Havaco when they arrived at the scene, and Lewis died from his injuries at Welch Community Hospital.

Brown also was charged with wanton endangerment and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was arraigned before Magistrate Dannial Mitchell. No bond was set.

The West Virginia State Police Welch detachment assisted in the investigation.
