Menopause is that phase in a woman's life when their menstrual periods cease. It occurs when the ovaries stop producing eggs, resulting in low estrogen levels, the hormone that controls the reproductive cycle. Menopause is a natural process and most women experience it between the ages of 45 and 55. But in some cases, women witness menopause before the age of 40, which is termed as premature menopause or premature ovarian insufficiency. About, 2 per cent of the women worldwide and 5.5 per cent of the women in India experience menopause before completing 40 years of age. As per Dr Geeth Monnappa Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Fortis La Femme Hospital, Bengaluru, premature menopause can occur due to diseases, genetic or environmental factor. But in all cases, it may have serious health consequences.
