TV, Tucker athletes qualify for state meet

WEST UNION — Tygarts Valley and Tucker County qualified several athletes for the state meet in the Class A Region II Championships held Wednesday at Doddridge County.

The Tygarts Valley girls had two regional champions as Joie Bell captured the long jump with a leap of 15-10 and the shuttle hurdle relay of Bell, Alyvia George, Rommie Shumate and Landrie Lanham took first in a time of 1:12.22.

Lanham was third in the 100 hurdles (17.36) and Arika Barbe third in the high jump (4-06).

Earning at-large state berths were George in the 100 hurdles (17.82), the 4×100 relay of Bell, Shumate, Barb and George with a time if 56.34 and Bell in the 100 (13.74).

Tucker County qualified four relays and Kate Falls, who earned an at-large berth in the 800 (2:39.46), and Erin Chambers in the 3,200 (12:56.65).

The 4×400 relay (Karlee Smith, Addie Buckley, Falls and Chambers) placed third (4:38.48) and the 4×800 (Falls, Chambers, Hannah Hardy and Smith) was second in a time of 11:17.35.

The 4×200 unit of Zoe Nestor, Lilly Callaway, Smith and Buckley secured an at-large berth with a time of 2:00.73, while the shuttle hurdle relay of Smith, Darrah Pennington, Buckley and Callaway turned in a an at-large qualifying effort of 1:16.95.

Doddridge County won the team title with 149.50 points, followed by South Harrison (84), Petersburg (63), Trinity (58), Tygarts Valley (39), Moorefield (37), Union (31), Tucker County (29.50), East Hardy (26), Clay-Battelle (20), Pendleton County (7), Paw Paw (7) and Notre Dame (1).

The Tygarts Valley boys qualified four individuals and four relay units.

Caden Boggs placed second in the 100 with a time of 11:41, Wade Warner was third in the 300 hurdles (46.34) and Brier Daugherty third in the shot put (42-06).

The 4×100 and 4×200 relays comprised of Jace Swecker, Josh Bright, Liam Depp and Boggs both placed third in times of 45.78 and 1:36.10, respectively.

Swecker, Bright, John Sutton and Warner finished second in the 4×400 in a time of 3:48.95, while the shuttle hurdle relay of Warner, Alex Sutton, John Sutton and Swecker earned an at-large berth with a time of 1:07.85.

Others claiming at-large berths were Boggs in the 200 (23.79), Warner in the 110 hurdles (17.43) and Depp in the 100 (11.82).

Tucker County had one individual regional champion as Tate Mullenax captured the discus with a throw of 122-04. He also earned an at-large berth in the shot put (39-09), along with Dominick Mullenax in the discus (112-04).

The 4×800 relay of Wesley Strawderman, Clay Poling, Jakob Barrett and Devin Witemore took first in a time of 9:18.87 and garnering an at-large berth was the 4×400 relay (Strawderman, Trent Eure, Witemore and Haden Wamsley) in a time of 3:53.79.

Doddridge County also captured the boys meet with 224 points, followed by East Hardy (65), Tygarts Valley (57), Trinity Christian (39), Petersburg (34), Tucker County (34), Clay-Battelle (30), Moorefield (21), South Harrison (20), Notre Dame (17), Paw Paw (12) and Pendleton County (1).

The Class A portion of the state meet will be held Thursday at Charleston’s Laidley Field.
