Flash flood warning in effect for parts of Kanawha, Putnam counties

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — The National Weather Service has upgraded a flash flood watch to a flash flood warning for parts of West Virginia.

As of about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, there have been several reports of high water, especially in the Sissonville area.

A flash flood warning is in effect until 1:15 a.m. Friday for southern Calhoun County, northern Kanawha County, northeastern Putnam County, Roane County and southeastern Jackson County.

The weather service said several locations will experience flooding, including Spencer, Sissonville, Clendenin, Poca, Kenna, Amma, Statts, Mills, Harmony, Tariff, Given, Kentuck, Liberty, Walton, Orma, Left Hand, Looneyville, Nicut, Chloe, Fairplain and Gay.

A flash flood watch is in effect Thursday afternoon for southeastern Ohio and parts of West Virginia, including Kanawha and Putnam.

A flash flood watch is issued for Wood, Pleasants, Tyler, Mason, Roane, Wirt, Calhoun, Ritchie, Doddridge, Braxton, Gilmer, Lewis, Harrison, Taylor, Upshur, Barbour, Webster, Pocahontas and Randolph counties in West Virginia.

In Ohio, Perry, Morgan, Athens, Washington, Jackson, Vinton, Meigs and Gallia counties are under the watch.

The flash flood watch is in effect from 1 p.m. Thursday to late Friday night. At 10:35 a.m., the weather service expanded the flood watch to include Kanawha, Putnam, Clay and Nicholas counties.

The weather service said multiple rounds of rain showers and storms are likely, with rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches expected each day. Heavy amounts of rain in short periods of time can cause creeks and streams to rise.
