An investigator for Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey‘s office who was providing security outside her Granada Hills home Saturday afternoon fired at a suspect trying to steal his car right in front of him, police said.

The shooting occurred outside Lacey’s home in the 17900 block of Mayerling Street at around 6:20 p.m., according to LAPD.

Several D.A.’s office investigators were there, with two of their vehicles parked in the driveway, when two men in another car pulled up, said Officer Mike Lopez, an LAPD spokesman.

One of the investigators was just getting out of his car when one of the suspects ran up and tried to get in. The investigator fired at the suspect, who fled back to his own car.

The two suspects peeled off, then crashed a short time later. They abandoned the first car and stole another one nearby. When police found the abandoned car, they determined it had been stolen earlier that day.

Police have not provided descriptions of either of the suspects.

No one was hit in the shooting, Lopez said. The D.A. investigator who fired had minor injuries.

It’s not clear if the attempted car theft was random, or if the suspects knew they were stealing a car outside the D.A.’s house. Officials also haven’t said if Lacey was home at the time of the shooting.

Lopez said LAPD detectives were assisting in the investigation of the stolen vehicle. LAPD was not investigating the shooting by the D.A.’s office investigator.

“It would be their shooting and their investigation,” Lopez said.

A D.A. office spokesman did not return a request for comment about the incident or potential shooting investigation.

This is the second incident involving a gun near Lacey’s home this year. In March, Lacey’s husband David pointed a handgun at Black Lives Matter protesters who knocked on their door in the early morning.

Lacey lost her re-election bid to former San Francisco D.A. George Gascón this month. Her term is up on Dec. 7.
