Benchmark indices hit fresh record highs on Wednesday as benign US inflation print encouraged investors while some industry-favouring government decisions also boosted morale. The 30-share pack Sensex rose 476.11 points or 0.82 per cent to close at 58,723.20. Its broader peer NSE Nifty climbed 139.45 points or 0.80 per cent to 17,519.45. Equity investors grew richer by Rs 2.16 lakh crore, as their total wealth represented by BSE market capitalisation rose to Rs 259.68 lakh crore.

Wall Street opens slightly higher; economic uncertainty weighs
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 3.4 points, or 0.01 per cent, at the open to 34580.95. The S&P 500 rose 4.4 points, or 0.10 per cent, at the open to 4447.49, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 33.6 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 15071.34 at the opening bell.
Govt to sell 5% in Hindustan Copper via OFS
The government will sell 5 per cent of its stake in state-owned Hindustan Copper through an offer for sale (OFS) this week, according to a regulatory filing. The OFS will take place on Thursday and Friday through a separate, designated window of the BSE Ltd and NSE, Hindustan Copper said in a filing to BSE.
No structural change at Tata Group on anvil, says N Chandrasekaran
Tata Sons Chairman N Chanrasekaran on Wednesday said there are no leadership structural changes on the anvil at the holding company of the $106 billion salt-to-software conglomerate. Ratan Tata, the octogenarian chairman of Tata Trusts that have controlling stake in Tata Sons, separately said he was extremely disappointed over reports speculating a major revamp in the leadership structure at the group.

India approves relief measures for telecom sector
India's federal cabinet on Wednesday approved a much-expected relief package for the country's cash-strapped telecoms sector, a senior government source said. The so-called relief package, which is likely to include a moratorium on payments for airwaves, will help India's three major wireless carriers including tycoon billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio but especially the embattled Vodafone Idea.

Nikkei slips from 3-decade high on profit-taking, SoftBank drag
Japanese shares on Wednesday retreated from three-decade peaks hit in the previous session, as investors took profits after a strong rally over the last two weeks and Chinese regulatory concerns dragged SoftBank Group and property shares. The Nikkei average dropped 0.52% to 30,511.71. On Tuesday, it rose above its February peak to reach 30,795.78, the highest level since August 1990. Hong Kong stocks fall at open
Hong Kong stocks sank at the open of trade Wednesday morning, in line with a retreat across Asian markets that was fuelled by Wall Street losses as investers fret over the global economic recovery. The Hang Seng Index fell 0.73 percent, or 186.27 points, to 25,315.96. The Shanghai Composite eased 0.33 percent, or 12.11 points, to 3,650.49, while the Shenzhen Composite Index on China's second exchange gave up 0.47 percent, or 11.70 points, to 2,477.19.
Japan stocks open lower on profit-taking
Tokyo stocks opened lower on Wednesday as investors sought to lock in profits after recent rallies, with falls on Wall Street also weighing on the market. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index was down 0.65 percent, or 200.30 points, at 30,469.80 in early trade, while the broader Topix index slipped 0.81 percent, or 17.18 points, to 2,101.69.
Gold steady above $1,800 per ounce
Gold prices held above the key psychological level of $1,800 as the dollar and bond yields came under pressure after a tamer-than-expected rise in US inflation led to uncertainty on when the U.S. central bank will begin tapering its asset purchases. Spot gold was steady at $1,802.86 per ounce on Wednesday, having hit a one-week peak of $1,808.50 in the previous session.
Dollar drifts as soft inflation raises taper timing questions
The dollar drifted within recent ranges against major peers on Wednesday after softer-than-expected U.S. inflation raised doubts about a taper of Federal Reserve stimulus this year. The dollar index stood at 92.632, little changed from Tuesday, when it dropped following the inflation data only to recover on haven demand as stocks slid on Wall Street.

Equity indices resumed their climb on Tuesday after a day's pause following gains in IT, bank and engineering stocks amid a muted trend overseas. The 30-share BSE Sensex ended 69.33 points or 0.12 per cent higher at 58,247.09. The broader NSE Nifty advanced 24.70 points or 0.14 per cent to its fresh closing record of 17,380.
