EACH PART OF THE MEAL MUST BE INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED BEFORE BEING LOADED INTO VANS FOR DISTRIBUTION DAILY TO KIDS’ ACROSS CENTRAL MARYLAND. >> WE NEED VOLUNTEERS PRIMARILY IN THE MORNING FROM 9 TO 12. WE ALSO HAVE A LONGER SHIFT FOR VOLUNTEERS WHO CAN MAKE IT AS A COMMITMENT FROM 9 TO 230. THIS IS WEEKDAYS MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY. >> WITH BACK TO SCHOOL AND MORE PEOPLE GETTING BACK TO WORK, THE FOOD BANK HAS SEEN A DRAMATIC DROP IN VOLUNTEERS, 31% BETWEEN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER. BUT AS THEY MOVE INTO THEIR BUSIEST TIME OF YEAR WITH A PANDEMIC IN PLAY, THEY SEEN A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN THE AMOUNT OF FOOD THEY’RE DISTRIBUTING TO COMMUNITIES. >> SINCE MARCH, WE HAVE DISTRIBUTED OVER 36,000,000 POUNDS OF FOOD JUST TO GIVE YOU A COMPARISON THAT’S ALMOST DOUBLE WHAT WE DISTRIBUTED DURING THE SAME PERIOD LAST YEAR. >> MASK, SOCIAL DISTANCING, ALL THE SAFETY PROTOCOLS PUT IN PLACE STARTING IN NOVEMBER . Calling all volunteers, the Maryland Food Bank is asking for help as they get ready to move into their busiest time of the year on top of the coronavirus pandemic."Whether it's sorting food in our warehouse or packing meals in our kitchen, we rely on volunteers," said Thomas Higdon, volunteer program manager for the Maryland Food Bank.At the Maryland Food Bank, there's a big-time need for volunteers, specifically, to help pack grab-and-go meals in their kitchen. Each part must be individually wrapped before being loaded into vans for distribution daily to kids across central Maryland."We need volunteers, primarily in the mornings from 9 a.m. to noon. We also have a longer shift for volunteers who can make it as a commitment from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This is weekdays, Monday through Friday," Higdon said.How to volunteer with the Maryland Food BankWith students going back to school and more people returning to work, the food bank has seen a dramatic drop in volunteers -- by 31% between August and September. But as they move into their busiest time of year with a pandemic at play, they've seen a dramatic increase in the amount of food they're distributing to communities."Since March, we have distributed over 36 million pounds of food. Just to give you a comparison, that's almost double what we distributed during the same period last year," Higdon said.Masks, social distancing and all the safety protocols will be put in place starting in November. The food bank is also going to start taking temperature checks.
