SD receiving $6 million in CARES Act grants; 1 COVID-19 death reported Friday

PIERRE, S.D. — More than $6 million in two CARES Act grants is targeted at responding to the coronavirus pandemic in South Dakota, according to a news release. The grant money was announced by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration.

“South Dakota is working to get back to normal, and the Trump administration has been a tremendous help to us in that effort,” said Gov. Kristi Noem. “I’m grateful to Secretary Wilbur Ross and the Department of Commerce for continuing to support our small businesses with the capital they need to deal with the unique challenges that they’re facing."

About $4.4 million in CARES Act Recovery Assistance will go to the South Eastern Development Foundation, Sioux Falls, a six-county region including Clay, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, Turner and Union counties.

In addition, $1.8 million in CARES Act Recovery Assistance will go to the Northeast Council of Governments, Aberdeen, South Dakota, a 12-county region including Beadle, Brown, Campbell, Day, Edmunds, Faulk, Hand, Marshall, McPherson, Potter, Spink, and Walworth counties.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 death toll in South Dakota increased by one to 122 on Friday, July 24, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

A Pennington County man in his 50s is the latest to die of COVID-19, according to state health officials.

Positive cases in the state rose to 8,200, up 57 from Thursday. Recoveries are up by 47 to 7,261.

Active cases increased by nine to 817 on Friday. A total of 45 people are hospitalized with COVID-19. Total hospitalizations increased to 796, up four from Thursday.

A total of 954 new test results were reported on Friday.
