 1. Custom Comfort Mattress

Buying a new mattress is one of those most vexing household problems.

Mattresses cost a lot of money and the choices are endless, to the point of confusion. Soft, pillow top or firm? Spring coil, memory foam or gel?

Custom Comfort Mattress gets high marks from its customers for its ability to make the best mattress for whatever need the buyer requires.

That’s right. The company makes each mattress right here in Orange County.

Got a bad back? There are lumbar settings to suit you. Those with a tight budget can find a good fit, too.

Customization is the unique quality for this family-owned business founded in 1988. Custom Comfort Mattress makes its mattresses using modern machines, traditional construction methods and natural materials such as cotton, wool and latex. Each bed takes 6-12 hours to make.

“We put our customers first,” the company says. Sales reps take a no-pressure approach while offering free sleep consultations. It’s not just the bed, they say. The pillows matter almost as much.

Custom Comfort also specializes in the double-sided mattress, something that’s become more difficult to find as pillow-top mattresses emerged as the buyers’ favorite. Why? The single-sided mattress lasts only three prime years because you can’t flip it upside down, so it breaks down faster, the company says. A double-sided mattress has a lifespan of nearly 15 years.

And don’t fret. Custom doesn’t mean off-the-charts expensive. The company offers a budget mattress line that starts under $400. It offers adjustable beds, too, at affordable prices. Want more options? Try a massaging mattress or one with undermount lights. There are Bluetooth capabilities, too, to preset certain settings throughout the night.

Curious customers can also tour the mattress factory. Just call a shop to arrange a personal look-see.

2. Sit ‘n Sleep

You know the pitch, right? “Sit ‘n Sleep will beat anyone’s advertised price or your mattress is freeeeee!”

That’s Larry Miller, the longstanding pitchman for the mattress chain. He’s also the CEO of the Gardena-based mattress retailer. Larry has a knack for getting people to swap out their old mattresses, warning that older beds “double their weight” thanks to millions of stowaway dust mites.

All that clever marketing has boosted Sit ‘n Sleep to solid profitability. The Southern California mattress chain boasts several locations in Orange County and is expanding yearly.

Customers say they love the service and the variety of mattresses available at Sit ‘n Sleep. The company uses a concept it calls “bedMATCH” technology in which customers lie down and the system calculates the right mattress for that person’s body. “Say goodnight to guesswork,” Sit ‘n Sleep says.

The company says it has thousands of five-star mattress options to choose from.  If you break in a new mattress for 30 nights and don’t feel satisfied, the 120-night sleep trial “has your back.”

3. Sleep Number

Perhaps you sleep with a log of a spouse or a child that likes to kick you in the head around 3 a.m.

Sleep Number wants to take away all the nighttime woes by giving you a piece of the mattress all to yourself.

The concept is simple. The luxurious air mattress is divided at the head into two sections, allowing a user to control the pitch on his or her side. Users can also control the firmness and in some models the temperature in each zone. The company’s 360 model takes it a step forward, using an “IQ” system that listens for snoring (and adjusts the sleeper upward). All the bed’s technology and how a user slept can be viewed using a Sit Number app on a smartphone or tablet.

All that customization is costly, but the stores often run discounts and clearance on some models. Customers in reviews rave about the process of finding just the right fit for their high-quality, elevating beds.

The Wisconsin company employs some 4,220 people nationwide. Sales reps are trained to know all the modern technology of these customizable mattresses.
