Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung lead 5G RAN outside of China

According to a recently published report from Dell’Oro Group the ongoing supply chain shortage impacted the radio access network (RAN) market in the third quarter, with multiple suppliers and operators now raising flags.

Still, this was not enough to derail the positive momentum that has characterised the RAN market over the past couple of years. Preliminary estimates suggest that the overall 2G-5G RAN infrastructure equipment market recorded a seventh consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth in the third quarter, Dell'Oro says.

"The RAN market remains on track for a fourth consecutive year of robust growth, underpinned by healthy demand for connectivity," said Dell’Oro Group analyst Stefan Pongratz.

"At the same time, more challenging comparisons combined with increased risks surrounding the supply chain will weigh on the market in 2022," continued Pongratz.

Additional highlights from the 3Q 2021 RAN report:

  • Global RAN rankings remained unchanged with Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia, ZTE, and Samsung leading the market.
  • RAN revenue shares are changing as on-going efforts by the US government to curb the rise of Huawei and improve supplier diversification are starting to show in the numbers, especially with new footprints outside of China.
  • Preliminary estimates suggest Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung were the top three 5G RAN suppliers outside of China in the quarter.
  • Following two consecutive years of double-digit growth, total RAN revenues are projected to advance 3 percent in 2022.

Dell'Oro Group says it's RAN Quarterly Report offers a complete overview of the RAN industry, with tables covering manufacturers’ and market revenue for multiple RAN segments including 5G NR Sub-6 GHz, 5G NR mmWave, LTE, macro base stations and radios, small cells, Massive MIMO, and Open RAN. The report also tracks the RAN market by region and includes a four-quarter outlook, the group concluded.

  • China Mobile hits 5.4Gbps with 3CC CA and 1024QAM test

    Information and communication technology solutions provider ZTE has collaborated with China Mobile’s Zhaijiang branch and Qualcomm to achieve a 5.4Gbps peak data rates.

    Through the end-to-end field test of 3CC CA (Carrier Component Carrier Aggregation) combined with 1024QAM (1024-state Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) in Jiaxing, the test showcased a single user downlink peak rate surpassing 5.4Gbps.

    ZTE said the validation harnessed new 5G-A features to unlock the potential of 5G commercial networks.

    “This demonstration provides an important reference point for accelerating the commercialization of 5G-A,” ZTE said.

    Touted to be a "5G-Advanced Dual-Chain Integration Innovation Demonstration Bases," China Mobile Zhejiang branch leverages its commercial 5G network to gradually implement 5G-A air interface enhancement technologies.

    The aim is to expand the information highway and fully cater to the demanding requirements of emerging services such as VR smart experiences, ultra-high-definition live broadcasting, and glasses-free 3D.

    Since earlier this year, China Mobile, in collaboration with ZTE and Qualcomm, has conducted what it calls the “world’s first end-to-end commercial verification of downlink 3CC CA with 1024QAM in Jiaxing, garnering a total bandwidth of 260MHz on 2.6GHz and 4.9GHz.”

    1024QAM, a higher-order modulation technology defined in Release 17, can transmit 10 bits of data in a single symbol and can be used in conjunction with 3CC CA, improving peak data rate and spectral efficiency by 25% over 256QAM in the same bandwidth.

    The verification used ZTE's commercial 5G network equipment and test device powered by the 5G modem and RF system, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75.

    The field test results showed that the combination of these two 5G-A features achieve a single-user downlink data rate of over 5.4Gbps.

    Yesterday, CommsWire reported Samsung and Qualcomm also completed 1024 QAM tests for both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) spectrum bands.

  • GenAI smartphones expected to make up 11% of shipments this year

    About 11% of the smartphones sold during calendar year 2024 will be capable of using GenAI, the technology analyst firm Counterpoint Research says. adding that this estimate was higher than an earlier one made in December 2023. The figure was predicted to rise to 43% by 2027.

    The update was needed, the firm said, because of the anticipated entry of Apple into this segment later in 2024.

    Counterpoint defined a GenAI smartphone as "a mobile device that leverages large-scale, pre-trained generative AI models to create original content or perform contextually-aware tasks".

    It added: "We expect such devices to have multimodal capabilities, allowing them to process text, image, voice and other inputs to generate a variety of output and enable a user experience that is fluid and seamless.

But at present, a device should have hardware capabilities that are comparable to, or exceed, the performance of current flagship smartphones to effectively run generative AI models."

    Research director Tarun Pathak said more than 10 OEMs had launched more than 30 GenAI-capable smartphones so far.

    "AI in smartphones has been a key talking point since the start of this year, especially after the successful debut of the Galaxy S24 series, where Samsung has gained good mind share in marketing early AI use cases," he noted.

    "We expect Samsung to lead GenAI smartphone OEM rankings in 2024. This is the second trend in the past couple of years where Samsung enjoyed an early-mover advantage; the first being success of its foldables.

    "The AI advantage will provide Samsung momentum in the mid-to-premium smartphone segment as GenAI features get recognised more broadly in coming years.”

    Pathak said once Apple entered the segment, "we expect AI to immediately become a must-have feature in all mid-to-premium smartphone launches starting 2025. However, the real differentiation will lie in use cases, as consumers are still evaluating the potential impact of AI in their future devices.”

    Counterpoint associate director Mohit Agrawal said smartphones of the future would be more personalised to cater to individual needs and preferences, and AI would play a central role in driving these personalised experiences.

    "As OEMs differentiate themselves on AI positioning, the key here will be the evolution of AI use cases," he explained. "Currently, these use cases include enhanced imaging capabilities, translation features, improved app experiences, content recommendations, creating more personalised content, and more.

    "These use cases will evolve as large language models will continue to grow in both size and efficiency. Counterpoint believes that the integration of edge (mobile devices) and cloud will be the mainstream model for generative AI in smartphones, and OEMs with an equally strong play in software capabilities, along with strategic industry partnerships, are likely to stay ahead of the competition.”

    The analyst firm said it expected GenAI smartphones to hit an inflection point in 2025 as they appeared in broader price segments, especially the US$400-US$599 (A$621-A$930) price tier.

    The phones costing more than US$600 and also those in the US$400-US$599 price bands were predicted to account for nine out of every 10 GenAI smartphones sold in 2024.

    "Leading chipset companies such as MediaTek and Qualcomm have already taken the lead in embracing generative AI smartphones. They have launched several mobile computing platforms that support multimodal large AI models on devices," the firm said.

    "We expect Qualcomm to lead in the AI SoC space in 2024, capturing almost half of all GenAI smartphone shipments, followed by MediaTek with a 13% share."

  • NBN Co deploys Nokia’s fibre solution to show broadband speeds over live network

    Wholesale broadband provider NBN Co completed what it calls the first live network demonstration of multiple next-generation PON technologies, leveraging Nokia’s fibre Lightspan access platform.

    NBN Co delivered 10G, 25G, 50G, and 100G broadband speeds over its existing fibre network using Nokia’s Lightspan platform.

    NBN Co was able to add capacity to its networks, demonstrating the co-existence of multiple PON technologies.

    For example, NBN Co showed a combination of 10G, 25G and 50G, as well as 10G, 25G, and 100G on the same fibre.

    Nokia said this trial shows how operators can enhance 10G PON to symmetrical 25G PON and eventually evolve to 50G PON or 100G using the same passive and active fibre components.

    “We are always looking for ways to push the capabilities of the NBN network,” said NBN chief network officer Dion Ljubanovic.

    “With the average Australian home forecast to download around 1 terabyte per month within the next decade, this successful demonstration showcases the world-class capabilities of NBN fibre to support the next generation of broadband services in the long term.”

    “As the industry’s first and only solution capable of supporting the full range of PON technologies from 10G to 25G, 50G, and even 100G, we can give operators the freedom and flexibility to meet their business needs while also helping to optimise network performance and reduce costs,” said Nokia vice president of broadband networks Geert Heyninck.

    “Nokia’s demonstration showcases the strength of the PON technology today and the multiple pathways available to support the applications of tomorrow,” said Omdia principal analyst and research manager Jaimie Lenderman.

    “The flexibility to choose between 10G, 25G, 50G, and eventually 100G and beyond empowers operators to customise their networks based upon customer requirements and future service plans for residential, enterprise, and beyond.”

  • Samsung takes the lead as global smartphone shipments rise in 1Q24

    Global smartphone shipments have risen by 7.8% year-on-year in the first three months of 2024 to 289.4 million units, the technology analyst firm IDC says.

    Samsung rose to the top among vendors, IDC noted, adding that with this being the third consecutive quarter of growth, it indicated that a recovery in the market was underway.

    "As expected, smartphone recovery continues to move forward with market optimism slowly building among the top brands," said Ryan Reith, group vice-president with IDC's Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.

    "While Apple managed to capture the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as the leading smartphone provider in the first quarter.

    {loadposition sam08}"While IDC expects these two companies to maintain their hold on the high end of the market, the resurgence of Huawei in China, as well as notable gains by Xiaomi, Transsion, Oppo/OnePlus, and vivo will likely have both OEMs looking for areas to expand and diversify.

    "As the recovery progresses, we're likely to see the top companies gain share as the smaller brands struggle for positioning."

    Nabila Popal, research director with IDC's Worldwide Tracker team, added: "The smartphone market is emerging from the turbulence of the last two years both stronger and changed.

    "Firstly, we continue to see growth in value and average selling prices as consumers opt for more expensive devices, knowing they will hold onto their devices longer.

    "Secondly, there is a shift in power among the top five companies, which will likely continue as market players adjust their strategies in a post-recovery world.

    "Xiaomi is coming back strong from the large declines experienced over the past two years and Transsion is becoming a stable presence in the top five with aggressive growth in international markets.

    "In contrast, while the top two players both saw negative growth in the first quarter, it seems Samsung is in a stronger position overall than they were in recent quarters."
