Chatham County coronavirus death toll rises to 157 on Saturday

Georgia’s confirmed case count for COVID-19 rose by 1,381 since Friday to reach 313,873 on Saturday, while the statewide death toll rose by 44 to reach 6,914, according to figures posted just before 3 p.m. on Saturday by the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Of Georgia’s 28,153 confirmed COVID-19 cases in patients who were hospitalized when the case was reported to DPH or when interviewed, 118 patients included in that total were added on Saturday.

Chatham County’s coronavirus death toll rose by three to reach 157 on Saturday. Data provided by the DPH website indicates that the county’s newest reported casualties were a 69-year-old Black man with unknown underlying conditions, a 76-year-old woman of unknown race and with unknown underlying conditions, and a 77-year-old white woman with underlying conditions.

Chatham County’s total COVID-19 case count rose by 30 to hit 8,407 on Saturday.

The death rate in Chatham County, measured as the percentage of known cases who die from COVID-19, rose to about 1.9% on Saturday.

In Bryan County, the confirmed-case count increased by four to reach 1,145 on Saturday, while the county’s coronavirus death toll remained at 11.

Effingham County’s listed case count increased by eight to reach 1,431 on Saturday, while the county’s COVID-19 death toll remained at 23.

Free COVID-19 testing is offered daily on weekdays and every other Saturday (next happening Oct. 3) at the Savannah Civic Center, where walk-ups are now welcome for the first hour; visit covid19.gachd.org for more details.

The daily DPH update includes rates of known infection in each county, expressed as the number of cases per 100,000 residents to make comparison easier. Chatham County’s infection rate on Saturday was 2,877 cases per 100,000 residents, while Glynn County’s rate was 4,012 per 100,000 residents.

COVID-19 testing through the Coastal Health District is free and available to all regardless of symptoms. It takes about five minutes and results are available in about 4-5 days by phone. No appointment is needed.
