54 people were shot in the city of Chicago, Ill. over the last weekend, including 12 who died of their wounds, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The most recent weekend’s shootings surpassed Chicago’s previous violent weekend, which saw eight fatal shootings and 48 others injured over the three-day Labor Day weekend.
The string of deadly shootings come as Chicago Police officials have recorded a 52 percent increase in murders in 2020 as compared to 2019. Shooting incidents in Chicago in 2020 also rose by 52 percent over the previous year. To date, there have been more than 2,200 shootings, including 520 murders since the start of 2020. By the same point in time in 2019, there were 1,400 shootings, including 340 murders.
Those killed by the most recent weekend of shootings ranged in age from 27 to 86. The youngest person wounded by gunfire in Chicago over the weekend was a 17-year-old who was shot in the hip on Sunday and hospitalized in good condition.
According to the Sun-Times, seven people were fatally shot on Saturday, while another four were fatally shot on Sunday and one person was fatally shot on Monday morning, shortly after midnight.
In addition to the 12 fatal shootings, a 42-year-old man was fatally stabbed on Sunday following a domestic dispute in the Park Manor neighborhood. A woman was arrested at the scene but no charges had been announced as of Monday, when the Sun-Times last updated its reporting.
Monday’s fatal shooting was reported at around 12:45 a.m. after a 27-year-old man got into a vehicle in the 1200 block of West Leland Avenue and was shot in the chest, neck and abdomen by another person in a dark-colored vehicle. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
At 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, someone on foot shot a 28-year-old woman and 26-year-old man who were sitting in a car in the 200 block of North Pulaski Road. The woman, who was struck in the back, was taken to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The man suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was taken to the same hospital in critical condition.
At around 6 p.m. on Sunday, 86-year-old Herbert Davis was reportedly found shot to death near the 11900 block of South Lafayette Avenue. Police took an 85-year-old man into custody following the incident, but he had not been charged as of Monday.
A 35-year-old man was also shot in the head on Sunday and died.
At about 12:10 a.m. on Sunday morning police found another man, Jeremy Akons, shot to death in the Woodlawn community on Chicago’s South Side.
Two men were shot at around 11:05 p.m. on Saturday near the in the 10600 block of South Mackinaw Avenue. One of the shooting victims, Juan Gomez Torrez, 43, was shot in the head and chest and pronounced dead at the scene. The other 39-year-old victim was struck in the torso and hospitalized at the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
Also at around 11:05 p.m. on Saturday night, a woman was found in the 500 block of North Pine Avenue, with a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two more people were killed hours earlier, just blocks away, in the 100 block of North Pine Avenue at around 2:05 a.m. Witnesses saw a male suspect firing into a crowd. A 47-year-old Lunyea Wilson was shot in the face and chest and 35-year-old Michael Mickey was shot in the chest and arm. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital where they were pronounced dead. Two men and a woman were also struck by the gunfire but were hospitalized in good condition.
Someone in the crowd near the 100 block of North Pine Avenue returned fire and reportedly struck the shooting suspect. The suspect was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
Joshua Davis, 32, was reportedly driving at around 2:05 p.m. in the 2300 block of West 63rd Street when a suspect in a dark-colored SUV drove alongside him and fired shots. At least one shot hit Davis in the chest and he was pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center.
Patrick L. Clinton, 34, was found with a gunshot wound to his back at around 3:02 a.m. in the 700 block of North Morgan Street. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead.
The first-reported fatal shooting victim for the Chicago weekend was 34-year-old Walter Leflora. He was found with a gunshot wound to the back of his head shortly after midnight on Saturday. Police found him in the 6200 block of South Seeley Avenue and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
