With voice-activated assistants, robot hoovers and lightbulbs you can control with words, it may already feel like our homes are pretty futuristic.

But with technology constantly evolving, we're set to see a huge upgrade in the next 30 years - with facial recognition software becoming commonplace in homes and new gadgets such as posters that can play movies.

In a study shared exclusively with FEMAIL, London-based designer furniture makers Arlo and Jacob looked at the mass of technology we can expect in our homes by 2050, including robot assistants to help prepare food and adjustable living spaces to adapt to our ever-changing social habits.

Comparing data from more than 50 different studies, here we reveal what our future homes will look like.

LIVING ROOMS

1. Personalised sofas by 2040: Comfort will really be key, as personalised sofas will be tailored to individual needs, such as how firm you like your pillows. It will even take into account how you should sit in it to correct posture and prevent injury.

2. Smart glass by 2030: Home security as whole will be revamped and windows will be made of smart glass, meaning with a flick of a finger they can be changed from white and frosted for privacy to clear, so that the view can be enjoyed.

3. Security Windows by 2030: Windows will also have automated security features so that they close when you leave the house, the study revealed, while detectors that trigger an alarm if an intruder attempts to break the glass will also be commonplace.

4. AR and VR by 2030: Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) will become more commonplace. VR artwork, floor to ceiling wall displays and immersive experience furniture are just some of the ways it could be introduced

5. 'Attend' live sports events through VR by 2040: Home entertainment will be at new levels, with people able to attend live events and sports matches from the comfort of their sofa thanks to virtual reality

6. Personalised lighting and entertainment (date unknown): Lights, speakers, chairs and curtains will become internet-connected, collecting data to personalise the setting based on the user.

KITCHENS

1. Voice-responsive, integrated appliances by 2030: Most kitchen appliances will be voice-responsive and integrated, while ovens will be able to send notifications to your phone when your dinner is ready.

2. Solar panel collecting windows (date unknown): Solar power collecting windows will generate energy to fuel smart speakers, recipe-displaying instruction screens, fully automated preparation units and even a cleaning robot dog.

3. Recipes projected on a countertop (date unknown): Smart work surfaces will weigh your food, project recipes and provide cooking suggestions that take into account the amount of time available and the person's cooking abilities.

4.  Robotic assistants by 2040: These robots will be able to pick up and store items, prepare vegetables and greet people at the door. These robots will also be our children's friends, coming in a smaller and cuter design.

5. Reusable water by 2050: By 2050, the water from your sink will drain into a filter and feed a hydroponic plant system, taking advantage of wasted water. Not only is this great for the environment, but it will help keep your house plants alive.

BEDROOMS

1. Smart wallpaper by 2030: In just 10 years' time, bedrooms will be decked out in smart wallpaper, acting as a projector and enabling people to watch movies without a TV or laptop.

2.  Smart mirrors by 2040: Mirrors will become personal stylists, offering suggestions on outfits and accessories based on the contents of your wardrobe, previous choices, your schedule for the day and even the weather.

3. Temperature control bedding (date unknown): Duvets of the future will be connected to monitors that track our body temperature, triggering them to heat up or cool down so that we're kept as comfortable as possible.

4. Maximising natural light by 2050: New paints and materials will use reflection to increase the intensity of the natural light in a room and create colour from white natural light. This will reduce the need for artificial light, allowing us to cut down energy use and increase our exposure to natural light.

5. Pillows that fight seasonal affective disorder: Pillows will incorporate the same light technology used in lamps and alarms currently used to combat symptoms of SAD (seasonal affective disorder). These pillows of the future will light up gradually, mirroring a natural sunrise and wake you up gradually with health-enhancing lighting to give you the best alarm clock possible.
