The best USB-C power adapters, cables, and portable chargers for iPhone 12

Whether or not you accept Apple’s explanation for why it no longer includes a charger in the box with the iPhone 12 series, the fact remains: The only accessory that now comes with the newest phones is a USB-C-to-Lightning cable that can be used with a charger for fast charging. Otherwise, you have to use a slower Lightning charger you may already own from older iPhones. But why not take advantage of faster charging? After all, the iPhone 8 and newer can fast charge using USB-C adapters, and Apple says fast charging gets you up to 50% battery capacity in about 30 minutes, depending on the overall battery condition of your phone.

Most people want faster charging, and that is available with a number of third-party USB-C wall chargers, cables, and portable chargers available for the most recent iPhone series. Here are some of the best ones we’ve found.

How to choose the best charging accessories

The iPhone 12 can work with chargers of up to 20 watts — letting you replenish about 50% of your battery in about 30 minutes. That means you should purchase a USB-C charger that’s capable of delivering a 20W charge or make sure you get at least enough to allow for maximum fast charging. Also, your new charger should support USB Power Delivery, which most third-party chargers do. Be sure to concentrate on USB-C, as opposed to the older, more familiar USB-A.

When it comes to charging cables, look for durability. Nylon braiding and reinforced connectors reduce tangling and fraying. Be sure to check out the dimensions of your new charger in the technical specs as newer chargers, made with gallium nitride (GaN), house adapters that are much smaller and more power-efficient at smaller sizes.

Finally, many third-party adapters offer multiple ports on a single wall charger, so consider buying an adapter with at least two ports or more for simultaneous multiple device charging. You can even get a mix of USB-C and USB-A if you want. Also consider whether you prefer folding prongs, as opposed to straight immovable ones, to protect the adapter as well as other items if you need to tote it around in your backpack.

This is our best look yet at the iPhone 16’s big design changes
iPhone 15 Pro in Natural Titanium held in hand in front of a cement brick wall.

It seems Apple is prepping yet another design refresh for its smartphones this fall season. In 2023, the iPhone 15 Pro made an aesthetic deviation by serving thinner bezels and titanium looks alongside a new multi-function button. This year, it’s going to be the entry-point iPhone 16 and its Plus variant that are apparently lined up for a design refresh.

Tech commentator Sonny Dickson has shared dummy units reportedly depicting all four iPhone 16 variants, which seem to confirm what previous leaks have predicted so far. On the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, the camera lenses dance diagonally on a square bump. Apple is reportedly ditching the current camera arrangement for their respective successors in favor of a pill-shaped vertical setup.
