Emma and Nora were the most popular baby names at Sanford and Avera, respectively.

New parents whose babies were born in Sioux Falls kept it classic in 2018, picking baby names that wouldn't be out of place in a Charles Dickens or Jane Austen novel.

At Sanford Health, Emma was the most popular name for newborn girls for the second year in a row. Oliver topped the list for boys.

At Avera, Nora was No. 1 for newborn girls, while Henry reigned supreme for baby boys.

Harper was the only name that made both hospital's top-five list for girls. The list for boys born at both hospitals was much more similar, with Oliver, Liam, Owen and Henry on both lists.

Sanford noted that Jackson, the top boy name in 2017, didn't even make its top-five list for 2018 newborns.

Some Sioux Falls parents picked names that partially matched predictions for top 2018 baby names nationwide, but other parents went their own way.

Early predictions from Names.org for top-10 baby names this past year only excluded local favorites Nora, Avery, Everleigh and Parker from its list. For boys, local parents picked Owen, Henry, Hudson – none of which appeared on the Names.org set of predictions.
