Cleveland Restaurant Week TO GO is now on; temple sets fundraising dates; more: Press Run

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS -- Support Cleveland area restaurants: Myra Orenstein, executive director of Cleveland Independents, would like all to know that Cleveland Restaurant Week, or more accurately, Cleveland Restaurant Week TO GO, is now taking place through March 31. Areawide participating restaurants, as the “TO GO” denotes, are offering orders to go.

Word is that this month is a particularly rough one for our local eateries who have fought through the pandemic and are doing all they can to make it to the nice, warm, patio-eating days of summer. So, don’t forget to eat local.

For a list of participating restaurants, menus and phone numbers, visit here.

Temple fundraiser April 10-28: Temple Emanu El’s annual fundraiser, this year titled “The Great Escape,” will feature six online events that include dynamic, interactive, and delightful activities meant to inspire families, singles, and everyone in between -- and, of course, raise funds.

The events are scheduled between April 10-28, with proceeds supporting worship, education, advocacy and engagement programming through the temple, 4545 Brainard Road in Orange.

The six events under “The Great Escape” umbrella are: “Mitch the Mensch Family Science Show,” with Mitch Cronig doing five science experiments, at 10 a.m. April 10; “Flashback Shaker Concert,” with live music all provided by Shaker Heights residents, at 7 p.m. April 14; “The Matzo Balls Diaries Live Theatre Performance,” in which you’ll discover the various powers hidden in foods, at 7 p.m. April 17; “T.R.A.P.T. Online Escape Room,” a team experience that challenges you to think outside the box, at 7 p.m. April 22; “In the Kitchen with Zach, Giovanni’s Executive Chef,” at 5:30 p.m. April 25; and a concert by Noah Budin, at 7 p.m. April 28.

All of the events are open to the public. Tickets for each Zoom household range from $15-$50 per event, and prices vary for pre-ordered meals. Donors and participants should contact Renee Higer by April 5 at rhiger@teecleve.org to RSVP for events, meal requests, Zoom logins, and sponsorship opportunities.

She’s on the team: Liora Fieldman, 10, of Beachwood, has been chosen by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, to join the PJ Our Way National Design Team.

PJ Our Way is the PJ Library program that gives readers, 9-12, known as “Tween Members,” the chance to choose their own age appropriate book or graphic novel with Jewish characters and storylines each month. Tween Members login to a child-safe website to select their books, leave reviews, watch videos, read blog posts, and connect with each other.

Fieldman, Liora

Liora Fieldman is a Beachwood fourth grader and avid reader who recently received a special honor. Read about it below.

Liora is a fourth grader at the Mandel Jewish Day School, and is the daughter of Alyson and Matt Fieldman. She is also a member of Congregation Shaarey Tikvah.

Liora and 13 other team members from across the U.S. and Canada have early access to monthly selections to interview authors, create web content about the books, participate in workshops, and lead conversations among their peers.

“I love to read all different kinds of books,” Liora stated, in a release. “Being a part of the PJ Our Way National Design Team has been fun. I am reading manuscripts before they’re published and I can help decide what other kids get to read.”

Food distribution event in Cleveland Heights: The Cleveland Heights Community Center is partnering with the Cleveland Food Bank to be a distribution point for the Farmers to Families food box program providing farm fresh food to Cleveland Heights residents in need.

Cleveland Hts. Community Center

The Cleveland Heights Community Center, 1 Monticello Blvd., will be the site of two farm fresh food distribution events. Those interested should call 216-691-7373.

There will be two distribution dates in March and two dates in April. A maximum of 50 boxes will be distributed at each of the dates at the community center, 1 Monticello Blvd. Those interested must call 216-691-7373 in advance to reserve a box and learn more details about the program. College news: Among those who graduated at the conclusion of the winter term from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio were Shaker Heights resident Sophia Marusic and Cleveland Heights’ Kevin Moeller.

Marusic graduated cum laude with a degree in middle childhood education, and Moeller with a master of arts degree in teaching biological science.

Also, Beachwood’s Gabriel Shapera was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Emerson College in Boston. Gabriel is a media arts production major and is a member of the college’s class of 2021.

And, at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., Cleveland Heights’ Sadie Jacobson made the dean’s list for the fall, 2020 semester. Sadie is a graduate of Hawken School and is an art and art history major.

Watch out for this scam: The city of Cleveland Heights has put out word that scammers impersonating Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents are targeting Ohioans to steal money and personal information.

Remember that DEA personnel will never request personal information over the phone and will only notify people of a legitimate investigation or legal action in person or by official letter. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the DEA, report the incident to the FBI online.

The history of Cleveland Mounted Police: The history and role of the Cleveland Mounted Police Unit in community policing is now captured in a new website.

“We believe the entire northeast Ohio region will enjoy reading about the history and present work of the Cleveland Mounted Police Unit,” said Woods King, III, principal officer with the Cleveland Mounted Police Charitable Trust, in a release. The Trust underwrites the expense of the website and its maintenance.

“The photography and freshness of this website captures the personality of this special Cleveland treasure and example of community policing at work,” King said. “The mounted police certainly reflect positively on the image of the city of Cleveland.”

The website indicates that the Cleveland Mounted Police Unit is assigned to the CPD’s Traffic Department. According to the website, the city pays for the stable that houses the horses and the salaries of the officers that ride and care for them, but it does not pay to purchase the horses or other out-of-the-ordinary expenses. Donations are welcome.

To visit the new website, see clevelandmountedpolice.com, or write info@clevelandmountedpolice.com.
