A rooftop fire at the Ikea store in Schaumburg Tuesday afternoon that damaged more than 20 solar energy panels was likely sparked by a faulty electrical system, authorities said.

The Schaumburg Fire Department, which was alerted to the blaze about 11:45 a.m., arrived at the scene minutes later and observed black smoke rising from the roof of the store at 1800 E. McConnor Parkway, Deputy Fire Chief Ken Koeppen said.

There were no injuries caused by the blaze, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters, but it forced the temporary evacuation of employees and customers who were inside the sprawling blue and yellow building, Koeppen said.

There was minimal water damage to the building, Koeppen said, and the Ikea store was reopened Tuesday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Koeppen said.
