The serene island of Lanai is a departure from the bustling beaches of Waikiki, buzzing art galleries of Lahaina, bubbling volcano of Big Island and popular port of Hilo—here the air is crisp, the tempo slower and the energy placid. Four Seasons Resort Lanai is snuggled into the rolling hills by a sunny, sandy beach ready to welcome guests to a unique and relaxing getaway.
AAA Five-Diamond designations are difficult to achieve, and upon entering the lobby guests are assured of the prestigious award. A two-tiered lobby area overlooks the pool and ocean beyond with a canoe pointed to sea. Friendly greetings and Four Seasons service excellence permeate the entire property from start to finish. Hotel room keys are incorporated into a silicone wristband, ensuring less of a likelihood of misplacing key cards, something I appreciated and could even go swimming with.
Open air hallways meander the property to rooms; my room looking into a lush rainforest-like gathering of tropical flora off a private verandah. The accommodations are stunning; dark woods and crisp white linens, a water bar and glowing sculpted fish lighting element create a warm and welcoming environment. Lighting ambiance can be adjusted from buttons on the wall with settings like “sunset” and “relax” and orchids artfully displayed in vases elevate the island feel even more. The spa-like bathroom continues the luxurious feel of the room, complete with state-of-the-art Toto toilet, soaking tub, glass-encased rain shower and stone sinks. The room is an oasis in and of itself, which is part of the point while staying on property.
The lagoon-like pools are surrounded by lush tropical tree and flower landscaping, orchids springing to life alongside the sidewalks and hanging from palms. “The Retreat” 21+ adult pool overlooks the ocean and has a waterfall feature for a serene spot on property. Nearby, the family pool is more energetic and alongside Malibu Farm restaurant, where guests can enjoy locally sourced cuisine. An easy walk down to the beach from to pool terraces, attendants are on-hand for complimentary lounge chairs and umbrellas, snorkel gear and towels. Tidepools at the far side of the beach reflect the beautiful natural landscape surrounding the resort, allowing for quiet moments in nature to listen to the gently lapping surf on the beach.
Pu’upehe Trail (Sweetheart Rock) is just beyond the beach tide pools. Waking before sunrise, I was treated to the beautiful spot as the sun broke the clouds over neighboring island Maui, splashing golden sunlight across the fluffy clouds and over the rocky outcropping on Lanai to the bay below. Definitely worth the easy walk from the property, this is a must-do while staying at the resort.
Lanai is a quiet island, as I alluded to before. You escape to Lanai to enjoy the quiet, to be at one with yourself and nature, to reconnect as a couple or with yourself. While there are activities to enjoy on the island, this is not a face-paced, nightlife-oriented, high-octane island; and its best to embrace the quiet calm of the space and enjoy. One such hassle-free outdoor activity is golfing on the resorts oceanside course. Whether playing the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Manele Golf Course or enjoying a meal (or cocktail) at VIEWS, the location above Hulope Bay is a prime spot to enjoy the ocean breeze and panoramic views. Reiki Sound Healing and Aerial Yoga are also offered at the resort for mind/body balancing. For those who enjoy equines, horseback riding through the surrounding hills is a unique vantage point of the island.
For something a little more energized, Lanai Adventure Park at sister property Sensei Lanai, a Four Seasons Resort, offers electric bike tours. The electric bikes, complete with fat tires and throttle to explore the red-dirt paths of Lanai with a guide, are extremely fun. Pedaling through the silver-hued ironwood forest and overlooking the Cook pine trees dotting the landscape, this was an excellent way to experience the rugged parts of the island.
Nobu Lanai and ONE FORTY are the fine dining experiences on property, both overlooking the ocean views from the lower level of the main building. Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s world-renowned fare is perfectly at home on the Pacific waters and Japanese-inspired architecture of the restaurant. Open for dinner, guests can partake in a particularly exceptional Omakase Tasting Menu for a Chef-curated experience. Steps away, ONE FORTY offers seasonal Hawaiian cuisine with delectable seafood and exceptional beef from Snake River Farms. I highly suggest the seafood tower for a brilliant array of shrimp, crab, lobster and oysters—a true crowd pleaser for the table and a great way to start the meal.
For grab-and-go options on property, The Break offers breakfast, snack and lunch options. The colorful case peppered with offerings such as purple Poi Doughnuts, Spiney Lobster Rolls and Vegan Coconut Brioche cream puffs. French-press coffee is available as well as tropical cocktails to take back to your room or enjoy in the open-air lounge.

Guests may be surprised by the modest spa; a 10-room facility tucked under the property with limited facilities. Talented therapists make up for the humble venue, and high-quality products are in-line with what guests expect at a Four Seasons Spa. My suggestion: enjoy the rest of the property as a priority.
Complimentary shuttle rides into Lanai City are available via Mercedes Sprinter and a Tesla house car service will transport guests to the golf club as well.
