MACKINAW CITY, MI – The ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic could cause changes to the Annual Bridge Walk across Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority will meet in a special session at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, to discuss this year’s event.

The meeting will be held online through Microsoft Teams. It will be available for online viewing and commenting here, using a web browser or the Teams app. It will also be available on YouTube.

A few years ago, the authority decided to close the bridge to traffic during the bridge walk “due to concerns for participants’ safety,” said Authority Board Chairman Patrick “Shorty” Gleason. Wednesday’s meeting will also center around participants’ safety, but now with COVID-19 at the forefront.

The pandemic is the cause of the cancellation or postponement of numerous festivals and events throughout the state. Many communities have begun to call off their Fourth of July celebrations. Michigan’s stay-home order currently extends though May 28.

As of Monday, May 11, Michigan has had a total of 47,552 confirmed coronavirus cases and 4,584 deaths associated with the respiratory virus.
