Three veteran state troopers retiring at Hagerstown barrack

The Maryland State Police barrack south of Hagerstown will lose 83 years of experience on Monday when three of its long-serving troopers are slated to retire, including:

• 1st Sgt. Kevin Lewis — Lewis has 28 years of service to Maryland and the residents of Washington County, and has served as assistant commander at the Hagerstown barrack since 2008.

A Smithsburg native, Lewis is a lifetime member of the Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co. and will continue to serve the public after he retires.

He and his wife Cynthia have four children, Ricky, Andrew, Rachael and Julie. 

• Senior Trooper Charles "Trey" Faith —Faith's 28-career with Maryland State Police has included uniformed patrol and undercover drug operations.

"Trey's contributions to the safety and welfare of his community is evident by being a positive role model to everyone he has had contact with," said Lt. Michael Fluharty, commander of the Hagerstown barrack.

Faith enjoys the outdoors, and will spend retirement with his wife, Kelly, and children, Will, Sophia and Abigail.

• Senior Trooper Douglas Bittinger —Bittinger is an Maryland State Police legacy. His father, retired Lt. Cecil Bittinger, was a former commander at the Hagerstown barrack.

His career began as a cadet. He was appointed as a trooper and spent a majority of his 27 years of service protecting the residents of Washington County.

He received numerous letters of appreciation from residents and was awarded multiple superintendents' commendations.

Bittinger and his wife Sunni have two children, Darren and Sara.
