MARYLAND — The number of coronavirus cases in Maryland climbed by 418, the state's Health Department reported Monday, bringing its total to 73,527.

The latest addition comes one day after the state reported its largest daily increase in coronavirus cases since July 1 — which could be attributed to a record number of test results (21,140).

Six more deaths were added overnight, pushing the state's fatality count to 3,194. That new total, however, does not include the 131 others who deaths were linked to the virus, but never confirmed by a lab test. They are considered "probable deaths" — and will not be added to the official total until officials can confirm the cause of death.

Gov. Larry Hogan said Monday that the number of intensive care unit beds in use by COVID-19 patients is the lowest in over three months.

"While a number of states continue to see alarming #COVID19 spikes and outbreaks, the encouraging trends in Maryland’s key metrics are holding steady," Hogan tweeted. "818,993 tests have now been completed, our statewide positivity rate is 4.63%, and ICU bed usage is at its lowest since March 29."

More than 220 testing sites statewide are checking people for COVID-19.
