Samuel G. Thiel

Samuel G. Thiel, age 56 of Minto, ND passed away on Friday, January 11, 2019 due to severe complications from diabetes.

Samuel G. Thiel was born February 13, 1962 in Wells Minnesota the son of the late Emmett and Margaret (Zimny) Thiel. He grew up and attended school in Becker, MN, graduating in 1980. Sam moved to Minto, ND in May of 1981 and started working for Louie Slominski Custom Harvesting. In 1982 he started trucking for Altendorf Trucking and later worked for area farmers. Sam was united in marriage to Susan Wiste on July 20, 1985 at the Vang Lutheran Church of rural Fairdale, ND. The couple made their home near Minto. In 1995 he started working as a heavy equipment operator for Gowan Construction and worked there for 18 years. After Gowan he worked for Narloch gravel for a short time and for the last two years was driving for Altendorf Trucking.

Sam was a member of the Zion English Lutheran Church of Grafton. He loved to spend his spare time baling hay, ice fishing and attended farm auctions. He had a large collection of miniature farm equipment, especially International Harvester. He was very proud of his family and especially of his two grandchildren. Sam was a very outgoing person who loved to visit. He would help anyone in need anytime.

He is survived by his wife, Susan of Minto, ND; daughters: Vanessa (Jon) Mattson, Grand Forks, ND; Carissa (Mike) Gully, Mantador, ND; his two grandchildren: Aubree and Odin Mattson; siblings: Vince Thiel, St. Cloud, MN; Brad (Ann) Thiel, Elk River, MN; Miles (Ruth) Thiel, Glenwood, MN; Missy (Ervan) Christopherson, Becker, MN; Gwen Thiel, St. Cloud, MN. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Peter.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Zion English Lutheran Church of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM and Wednesday for one hour prior to the service all at Zion English Lutheran Church, Grafton, ND. Interment in the spring.
