Premier League highlights: 10 talking points from the weekend as Arsenal are humbled at home

As is becoming the norm, the latest round of Premier League fixtures threw up some shock results.

Manchester United's eagerly-anticipated clash with Chelsea ended up being a damp squib as they played out a boring 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.

United's bitter rivals Liverpool, however, had no such problem finding the back of the net, seeing off a dogged Sheffield United 2-1 at Bramall Lane.

Arsenal's bid to finish in the top four suffered another blow as they fell to a shock 1-0 loss to Leicester at the Emirates.

The latest round of Premier League fixtures will come to a close this evening when Brighton and Burnley welcome West Brom and Tottenham to the Amex Stadium and Turf Moor respectively.

And ahead of the culmination of game week six, Mirror Football has taken a look at ten of the major talking points from the Premier League.

Diogo Jota impresses for Liverpool

Liverpool's £41million summer signing spared the Premier League champion's blushes against Sheffield United, completing the visitor's turnaround with a sumptuous header in the 64th minute.

The Portuguese forward - who now has two goals in four appearances - was impressive throughout the match and appears to be comfortable with being deployed on the right in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

VAR undoes the Gunners

There are three things you can be certain of in life: death, taxes and VAR being a major talking point the Monday after a round of Premier League fixtures. This Monday is no different, although the video assistant referee system is getting it tight for a decision they chose not to make.

Alexandre Lacazette scored a perfectly good goal in Arsenal's defeat to Leicester, meeting a Dani Ceballos corner and heading into the far corner. The linesman, however, ruled out the goal as he adjudged Granit Xhaka to have impeded Kasper Schmeichel, which replays showed was not the case.

Gunners fans were right to feel aggrieved after the match as it's VAR's job to correct the errors made by the officials. No doubt there'll be more VAR controversy this coming weekend.

Jamie Vardy haunts Arsenal again

The ghost of Jamie Vardy came back to haunt Arsenal again, with the former England striker coming off the bench to score Leicester's winner at the Emirates.

That's 11 goals in 12 appearances against the Gunners for Vardy, who former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger tried to bring to the Emirates in 2015. Arsenal fans will no doubt be sick of the sight of the Foxes hitman.

Manchester City suffer Sergio Aguero blow

Manchester City look set to be without the services of Sergio Aguero for the foreseeable future. The Argentine suffered a leg injury City's 1-1 draw with West Ham.

City's record goalscorer only recently returned from a knee injury that kept him on the sidelines for four months. Pep Guardiola will no doubt be sweating on the fitness of the club's talismanic striker.

Manchester United vs Chelsea fails to live up to the hype

Manchester United and Chelsea have produced some real classics down the years. Their latest meeting, however, didn't live up to expectations - with the top-four rivals playing out a dull 0-0 draw at Old Trafford. It was a game of very few chances, with the best opportunities falling to the home side.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard will no doubt have been more pleased with the result than his opposite number as his troops suffered an embarrassing 4-0 loss in their last visit to the Theatre of Dreams.

Donny van de Beek's woes continue

You would think a £40million summer signing wouldn't have to wait too long to get an extended run of games. Well, the wait goes on for Manchester United's Donny van de Beek, who has yet to start for his new club in the league this season.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists the Dutchman - who cut a frustrated figured on the sidelines last weekend - will soon become a regular fixture in the starting XI. Time will tell if the former Ajax man will get his chance to make his mark.

Toffees come unstuck on the south coast

They say all good things must come to an end. And sadly for Everton, their unbeaten start to the season has done just that. The table-topping Merseysiders suffered a 2-0 loss to Southampton last Sunday.

Ancelotti's men will look to get back in the win column this coming Sunday when they travel to St. James Park to take on Newcastle.

Fulham's struggles continue

Last season's Championship play-off final winners continue to haemorrhage goals, although this weekend they only conceded two in their clash with London rivals Crystal Palace.

Scott Parker's side have now been breached a whopping 14 times in the first six matches back in the top flight. If they carry on conceding and losing at this rate, they could very well seal an unwanted return to the Championship before Christmas.

Patrick Bamford runs riot at Villa Park

Leeds kicked off the latest round of Premier League action on Friday with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park, with Patrick Bamford the star of the show.

The former Chelsea striker reminded his detractors why he has previously held in such high regard by bagging an impressive hat-trick against Dean Smith's side.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa will be hoping for more of the same from the 27-year-old when his side welcomes Leicester to Elland Road next Monday.

Newcastle escape Molineux with a point

A last-minute freekick from Jacob Murphy spared Newcastle's blushes against Wolves, who dominated the visitors from the get-go. The Magpies were poor for large portions of the game, offering very little in terms of an attacking threat.

Steve Bruce will be hoping for much from his troops - who were lucky to leave Molineux with a point - when they face Everton on Sunday.
