Why Functional Resumes Screw Up Your Age 40+ Job Search

Many age 40+ job seekers have been advised to use a functional resume by outplacement, most career coaches/authors, and resume writers.

Today, I'm going to tell you to not use functional resumes, because they screw up your job search.

Here are a few reasons why you'll want to stay away from functional resumes:

  1. Intended To Hide Information: The whole point of functional resumes is to hide critical information, including resume gaps, recency of relevant experience, length of positions, and age.
  2. Gives Employers A False Impression Of You: One of the main purposes of functional resumes is to give employers a false initial perception that your experience is recent, that you don't have career gaps, that you're currently employed and that you're younger than you really are. These false perceptions come out during the interview process, and employers see this as deception ... because that's what functional resumes try to do and why they screw up your search.
  3. Employers Don't Believe Them: Most employers won't accept functional resumes from headhunters, because they don't believe them. As employers have experienced with many candidates before you, functional resumes are intended to deceive ... so why should they believe yours is telling the truth?

Good thing there are more effective ways to beat ageism than functional resumes.
