Investigators look into possible ‘mail fishing’ in Rhode Island

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE) – Investigators with the Narragansett Police Department are looking into possible checks stolen out of a USPS mailbox.

It’s called “mail fishing”; it’s where criminals often drop string covered in glue down into a mailbox to pull out the mail, which is a federal offense.

Police couldn’t release too many details, but would say that two people from Narragansett had mail stolen from a mailbox in a different town in Rhode Island.

Investigators are asking people to monitor their bank accounts, and if they think they’ve been a victim of mail fishing to immediately call police.

A spokesperson for the postal service told ABC 6 they’re aware of the possible mail thefts and are investigating.
