Shrewsbury residents call for immediate action after three years of flooding

Shrewbury residents have called for immediate action after they have suffered flooding three years in a row.

The Shropshire town has been among the worst-affected areas of the UK as flooding followed storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin.

Among those hit was Chris Allen, whose 700-year-old house and its garden beside the River Severn were so badly affected he was trapped inside all day on Tuesday.

"The river was literally flowing all the way around the house," the 53-year-old told the PA news agency.

"It was too dangerous to leave the house - it was probably about seven foot at the back of the house and two or three foot at the front."

The Severn Valley Water Management Scheme, which was set up to try to tackle the issue, is due to produce an overview of possible measures early this year.

What does the Met Office's yellow weather warning mean?

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and lightning covering much of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

"Frequent heavy snow showers are expected, along with very gusty winds and a chance of frequent lightning affecting some places," the Met Office said.

The warning means people should expect:

  • There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected
  • There is also a chance some vehicles and passengers could become stranded
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off
  • A small chance of injuries and danger to life from lightning strikes
  • Where lightning strikes occur, there is a small chance that building/structures could be damaged

There was also a yellow weather warning for wind covering parts of southeast Scotland and northeast England, which will expire at 6pm today.
