A mum has shared a cheap hack which she swears keeps head lice away.

Jeni Ryan, a mum-to-four daughters says she has mastered avoiding her girls getting nits through years of tried and tested methods.

The savyy mum says shared her four-step method of making sure the tiny creatures steer clear, using a children's detangle spray and cheap hairspray.

Posting to the Family Lockdown Tips and Ideas Facebook page, she said: "Back to school which means the dreaded return of those “nasty nits”

"As a Mum of four girls, ages 23, 21, seven and four, I’ve been through the whole process once and am now starting it all over again with my youngest just having started pre-school.

"I wanted to share what I know (through experience) a method that really does work in helping preventing them arriving. My daughter in year three has never had them since using this method.

1) Regular wet combing through hair

2) Keep girls hair tied up where possible (plaited hair is best)

3) Spray hair with a tea tree spray before styling. The spray I use is the Child's Farm detangler spray which contains tea tree.

4) Once styled apply a light cover of hair spray over your child's hair. This creates a barrier over the hair and makes it harder for the nits to cling on."

The mum's post attracted more than 1,000 comments from mums all keen to share their own tips.

A lot of parents agreed with Jeni. One said: "I also swear by that tea tree hair spray."

Another said: "Daughter is in year 5 and never had nits. We use child's farm shampoo conditioner and spray and I really think that's why!"

Another added: "The hair spray trick really works. If you do get some get through then I have always done this: cheap hair conditioner, smother it all over the hair and get the bit comb, do it every five days for three weeks and they are gone."

But some mum shared some different tips and tricks which they swear by, including coconut oil and good old Vosene shampoo.

One said: "I use coconut conditioner and the nitty gritty comb best comb I've bought."

Another said: "We’re using the Vosene kids shampoo with the natural head lice repellent in - and the the Vosene conditioning spray that also has lice repellent in."

"Tea Tree oil- a small drop behind the ears or around the hair line works too," added another.

"Vosene leave in conditioner in the morning will deter nits and she could still have her hair down," said another.

Another added: "I put my girls hair in a plait and use Vosene leave in conditioner after styling and never have nits."
