VA Coronavirus Hospitalizations Hit Lowest Level Since Mid-April

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health on Saturday reported 865 additional cases of the new coronavirus, seven new deaths and 46 new hospitalizations a day after part of the state entered phase 2 of its coronavirus reopening plan for businesses and gathering places. The latest cumulative totals are 49,397 cases of the coronavirus, 1,460 deaths and 5,054 hospitalizations.

While Northern Virginia and Richmond remain in phase one, the rest of Virginia is now in phase two. Among the easing of restrictions as part of phase two, restaurants can open at 50 percent of capacity and fitness centers can open indoor areas at 30 percent capacity.

The seven-day rate of positive tests for the state is 10.2 percent, not including antibody tests, according to the Virginia Department of Health. The rate is up slightly from the 10.1 percent reported Friday.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association reported 1,171 people with pending or confirmed coronavirus test results currently hospitalized on Saturday, down 95 from Friday. The number of people hospitalized with pending or confirmed coronavirus test results is at its lowest point since mid-April when the number first passed 1,000 hospitalizations as the crisis grew worse, according to VHHA data.

As of Saturday, 169 COVID-19 patients were using ventilators, up eight from 161 patients using ventilators on Friday. A total of 609 hospital patients are using ventilators as of Saturday, up from 583 on Friday. Total ventilator use among 2,959 available ventilators represents 21-percent use in Virginia. No hospitals are experiencing difficulty obtaining or restocking protective gear or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.

The number of coronavirus cases at long-term care facilities totaled 5,320 as of Saturday and the number of people who have died at these facilities has reached 823, or 56.4 percent of the state's total number of deaths from the coronavirus.

Fairfax County, the state's most populous jurisdiction, now has 12,056 positive cases and 413 deaths. Prince William County has the second highest number of cases, at 6,121, and 110 deaths.

Here are the latest cumulative case updates for our coverage areas as of Saturday:

  • Alexandria: 2,070 cases, 209 hospitalizations, 45 deaths; increase of 25 cases and six hospitalizations.

  • Arlington County: 2,195 cases, 389 hospitalizations, 120 deaths; increase of 22 cases and four hospitalizations.

  • Fairfax County: 12,056 cases, 1,409 hospitalizations, 413 deaths; increase of 152 cases, eight hospitalizations and three deaths.

  • Fairfax City: 68 cases, seven hospitalizations, five deaths; one new case.

  • Falls Church: 56 cases, 11 hospitalizations, eight deaths; one new case.

  • Loudoun County: 2,939 cases, 177 hospitalizations, 67 deaths; increase of 102 cases and two hospitalizations.

  • Manassas: 1,214 cases, 77 hospitalizations, 12 deaths; increase of 24 cases and three hospitalizations.

  • Manassas Park: 351 cases, 35 hospitalizations, six deaths; increase of eight cases.

  • Prince William County: 6,121 cases, 524 hospitalizations, 110 deaths; increase of 91 cases and five hospitalizations.

  • Fredericksburg: 192 cases, 24 hospitalizations, no deaths; six new cases.

  • Spotsylvania County: 634 cases, 45 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of 19 cases.

  • Stafford County: 765 cases, 77 hospitalizations, five deaths; increase of 15 cases and one hospitalization.
