THE prestigious and eagerly awaited Ironman 70.3 Middle East Championship witnessed unprecedented success with over 1,200 world class triathletes from all over the world putting on a thrilling show.
It was attended by His Majesty the King and held under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister.
Representative of His Majesty for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, chairman of Supreme Council for Youth and Sport and President of Bahrain Olympic Committee Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and first deputy president of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and president of Bahrain Athletics Association Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, both keen triathletes themselves, also took part in the event.
While Shaikh Khalid completed the cycling and running legs, Shaikh Nasser pulled out following an incident during the cycling leg which left him injured.
The energy-sapping event consisted of a 1.9km swim, followed by 90km cycling and a 21.1km run. It started at the Four Seasons Hotel and ended at Bahrain International Circuit.
