Princess Eugenie Proudly Showed Off Her Back Scar for Scoliosis Awareness Day
Princess Eugenie shared a new photo of the surgical scar on her back for Scoliosis Awareness Day.

“I was only 11 years old when I was told I needed surgery and that bombshell left me reeling,” she said in a past interview.
In honor of Scoliosis Awareness Day (June 28), Princess Eugenie bared her back on Instagram, showing off the surgical scar that marks her experience with the spine-bending condition. “I just wanted to share my scar and encourage anyone out there who’s gone through something similar to share theirs with me,” she captioned the photo. “Let’s be proud of our scars!”

“I remember your wedding dress,” someone else recalled. “You were proud to show your scar.”
In October 2018, Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank in an intentionally open-backed, off-the-shoulder gown. As a child, she would have never dreamed of proudly displaying the line down her spine that came from the surgery she had at age 11, but when her wedding day came around, she told ITV’s This Morning that it was “a lovely way to honor the people who looked after [her] and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this.” She knows how difficult recovery can be for kids especially, because it was really hard on her.
“I think the most upsetting time was before the operation—the fear of the unknown and having a condition that made me different,” she told The Telegraph in December 2018. “I was only 11 years old when I was told I needed surgery and that bombshell left me reeling, as well as the idea that I would not be at school, or be normal like the other students.”
Even into her teenage years and young adulthood, the mark reminded the princess of pain. “I remember putting cream only on my scar for years after the operation,” she continued. “There was an unexplainable feeling—like a kind of emptiness.”
Embracing her scar and sharing it with the world every year on Scoliosis Awareness Day has helped Eugenie to fill that void. And she hopes it does the same for others just like her.
