New York Jets 2019: Ranking the complete 53-man roster after yet another lost season — #29 running back/special teamer Trenton Cannon.

Trenton Cannon. 29. 30. . Running Back (IR)

The New York Jets under Mike Maccagnan thought they’d found lightning in a bottle with the 2018 sixth-round selection of D2 First Team All-American RB, Trenton Cannon outta Virginia State. But like almost every other decision made by the former general manager, Cannon has not flashed greatness with the rock in his hands.

But the elusive 5-foot-11, 195 pounds athletic baller with blinding speed found his role in Green-and-White on special teams, both as a gunner and return-man. As a rookie, he led this squad in S/T tackles.

This season, Cannon hurt his foot against the Patriots in Week 5 and spent the rest of the 2019 campaign on Injured Reserve. Trenton played in just four games this year, and returned five kicks, averaging 19.2 per — which is slim pickings considering that just kneeling down in the end zone positions the ball on the 25-yard line.

So, there is a distinct possibility that general manager Joe Douglas will seek to move on from Cannon. After all, he did not draft the player, and owes no allegiance.

But with the Jets futures of RB Bilal Powell and WR/KR Ty Montgomery very much uncertain there could be room for Trenton’s talents — particular if he improves in his role as a scatback. And it’s no secret that special teams coach Brant Boyer loves Cannon and that the player is signed to a team-friendly rookie deal (four years, $2.59 million).

Such facts bode well for Cannon’s future in Florham Park.
