Tiffany Anderson, right, USD 501 superintendent, was named one of four finalists for the 2021 Kansas Superintendent of the Year award by the Kansas School Superintendents' Association on Monday. The group will announce the winner Oct. 12.

Topeka Unified School District 501 superintendent Tiffany Anderson is one of four finalists for the 2021 Kansas Superintendent of the Year, the Kansas School Superintendent’s Association announced Monday.

Now starting her fifth year as USD 501 superintendent, Anderson had been nominated by her peers in June, with a committee from the superintendent organization narrowing 19 nominees to the four finalists.

Despite serving one of the state’s largest school districts, Anderson has become known for her hands-on approach, checking in with families regularly and even visiting students in the hospital. Anderson has also focused much of her work in reducing or eliminating barriers for students in the district, where 73% of students qualify for free or reduced school lunch prices.

“In an effort to make sure students remain focused and on track, she visits with each of the 30 schools and programs every 30 days to review the data for students by name,” the organization said in a release. “Additionally, under her leadership, Topeka 501 has introduced college prep programs in high minority, high poverty schools, giving students access to a college-level curriculum early to close gaps and ensure students develop soft skills.”

The other finalists are John Burke, superintendent at Haysville USD 261; Justin Henry, superintendent at Goddard USD 365; and Chad Higgins, superintendent at Maize USD 266.

After holding interviews with each of the four finalists, the organization will announce the winner of the 2021 Kansas Superintendent of the Year on Oct. 12.
