Coronavirus in Mississippi: The state tops 10,000 cases with 8 new deaths, 182 cases Wednesday

The Mississippi Department of Health reported eight new deaths and 182 additional cases of the coronavirus Wednesday, bringing the state total to 10,090 cases with 465 deaths.

Last week, Mississippi topped 1,000 cases in nursing homes across the state. Tuesday, the state surpassed 200 deaths in nursing homes.

Wednesday, MSDH reported 1,267 total cases in long-term care facilities and 212 deaths.

The first outbreak and death was reported at a Mississippi veterans home last week with 19 residents and 12 employees testing positive in Kosciusko. 

Lauderdale County has the highest number of active outbreaks at nursing homes with 126 cases and 27 deaths. The county — with a population of just over 74,000 residents — also has the highest death toll in the state, with 45 reported deaths. 

Hinds County, with the largest population in the state, again has the highest number of cases of COVID-19 with 698 confirmed cases. Madison County has the second highest number of confirmed cases with 493.

Issaquena remains the only Mississippi county without confirmed cases.

Mississippians in the 60-69 age bracket make up the largest number of current hospitalizations with 395. Those in the 70-79 age bracket make up the largest number of deaths, with 131 as of Wednesday.

Mississippians in the 40-49 age range have the highest number of confirmed cases with 1,723, reported Wednesday. Those in the 50 to 59 age range pace behind with 1,661 confirmed cases. 

The under 18 age bracket is the only group that has not had a coronavirus death.

An estimated 6,268 people are presumed recovered from COVID-19, the Health Department said on Monday. A person is presumed recovered if it's been 14 days since he or she tested positive and was not hospitalized or 21 days if hospitalization was involved. The estimated number of recoveries is updated weekly.

Mississippi reported its first confirmed case of coronavirus March 11. One week later, with 50 confirmed cases, the state reported its first coronavirus death on March 19.
