Marchan said a preliminary investigation indicated Marte had been involved in a two-car crash when he got out of his vehicle, was crossing the roadway and was struck by a Chrysler Voyager minivan in the inner roadway.

Marte, who was killed, had been alone in his vehicle, Marchan said. No other injuries were reported.

The crash remains under investigation.
