Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is visiting Alaska this week, and she began her trip in Southcentral at Mat-Su Central, a special homeschool program in Wasilla.

“It really is instructive to see what Mat-Su Central is doing to meet the needs of individual students and their families and to celebrate that,” she said.

During her tenure as Secretary of Education, DeVos has pushed hard for private school vouchers and funding. She said she would visit more areas that are “rethinking education” in Alaska.

“I am thrilled to be here and am really grateful to have the opportunity this morning to visit a couple of schools that are rethinking education and are focused on meeting the needs of individual students,” said DeVos.

She lauded some of the unique programming that is available in Alaska and said she is looking forward to visiting rural Alaska, where she said she sees many opportunities in delivering online education.

“I know Alaska has some unique challenges just given the size and scale of the geography of the state as well as the remoteness of the communities of the state,” she said.

According to Senator Dan Sullivan’s office, Sullivan will be traveling tomorrow to Kotzebue and Kivalina with Secretary DeVos.

In Kotzebue, they will be visiting the middle and high school, which houses the Northwest Magnet School.

In Kivalina, Devos will be touring the only school in the community.

Tomorrow morning before leaving for Kotzebue, Senator Sullivan and Secretary DeVos will be touring the ANSEP program at UAA tomorrow.
