GREENPORT, NY — A beeping noise in a mailbox in front of the Greenport post office sparked fears of a possible bomb or explosive device Tuesday night.

According to Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley, the incident was ultimately a "false alarm. A worker had left behind a package scanner in the mailbox in front of the post office. The low battery alarm in the scanner was going off, making a suspicious noise."

When the noise was first detected, the area around Front Street was taped off as police rushed to the scene.
