Plan your Lakeside Chautauqua day of antiquing for Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Lakeside Antique Show celebrates its 59th year of offering a scenic lake view, along with fabulous dealers and outstanding heirlooms.

Admission is $8 per person, which includes an auto pass for parking in this gated community. A very unusual perk for those attending this show is that buying cannot start before 9:30! So, that means everyone has an equal chance in this treasure hunt. There are three buildings to shop, as well as dealers throughout the grounds.

Shop the town of Lakeside, as well, which is filled with seaside merchandise, and perhaps dine at the Hotel Lakeside, one of the Mexican choices, the pizza shop, the Bird Cafe or The Patio Restaurant. Very quick eats are offered on the lawn, allowing optimum time for shopping.

Tourist note: The Marblehead Lighthouse is 10 minutes from Lakeside and is open from noon to 4 p.m. There is a small fee ($3 cash for ages 6 and up) for climbing the steps of the tower and viewing the picturesque aerial view. The Keepers House is free to tour.

More antiques, as well as souvenirs, can be found at the West Main Mercantile Shop, 215 W. Main, with hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Now, back to our home turf: On Sunday, Aug. 25, The Vintage Marketplace of the Falls will be taking place from noon to 5 p.m. in Grand Pacific Junction and downtown Olmsted Falls. There will be lots of outdoor vendors, as well as the local shops participating. Free admission and refreshments throughout the town.

Dear Yenke Peddler,

I acquired this picture at a resale shop many years ago. It was very interesting and fits in with my beach decor, in the cottage on Lake Erie. Can you tell me anything about this artist and value?

Dear Mary Kay,

Your lovely “beachy” watercolor print is called Breakwater, and it’s by Edward Van Goethem. He was born in Brussels (1857-1924) and had four siblings. Perhaps because his parents operated an orphanage for children, as well maintaining the family business -- a sugar refinery -- he was drawn to painting children. He loved the arts. Value for your 11½-inch-by-13½-inch, nicely framed and matted print would be $75.

If you have an item for evaluation, send a clear picture with history to Yenke Peddler, Brenda Yenke, P.O. Box 361633, Strongsville, Ohio, 44136. You may also email photos and information requests for Brenda to evaluate at kenyenke@aol.com.
