Statewide coronavirus update: Indiana reports 2,587 cases, 33 deaths

IndyStar

Indiana on Wednesday reported 2,587 new cases of the coronavirus and an additional 33 deaths.

Meanwhile, the weekly update of the county metrics map designed to chart the virus's spread showed three counties on the eastern border of the state in the red — Ohio, Dearborn and Fayette —down from four last week.

The rest of the map was mostly orange, the second-highest level of viral spread, with some yellow counties in the middle of the state.

Only three counties this week appear as blue, connoting minimal spread. Last week eight counties fell into this category.

The state is now testing more people than ever before for the coronavirus. Last Wednesday, the most recent day for which data is available, saw a seven-day moving average of more than 27,400 tests administered per day.

However, the positivity rate also continues to climb. The seven-day average for new positives is almost 2,400.

Meanwhile, the state’s availability of intensive-care-unit beds dipped below 30% for the first time since the state started tracking this metric. The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 illnesses is now as high as it was in mid-April.
