‘The Avengers of K-pop’ Super M unveiled as EXO, SHINee, NCT 127 and Way V members form supergroup

K-pop fans, it’s time to make a little bit of room in your heart for another band to stan.

After rumours that members of EXO, NCT 127, Way V and SHINee would be joining forces to create a K-pop supergroup, SM Entertainment has debuted said project.

Introducing… Super M.

EXO’s Kai and Baekhyun, Taemin of SHINee, Lucas and Ten from WayV and NCT 127 stars Taeyong and Mark have formed the group, nicknamed the ‘Avengers of K-pop’ as they were unveiled at Capital Congress on Wednesday.

SM founder Lee Soo Man and Capital Music Group CEO Steve Barnett made the announcement, saying that Super M will focus on performance-based music with an emphasis on choreography.

Looking at the members’ dance skills, we are on board with that.

Lee Soo Man explained the band’s name, saying that ‘Super’ refers to the synergy of the artists, and ‘M’ stands for ‘matrix’ and ‘master’.

The band will debut in October and while Super M will promote in both the US and Korea, the initial promos will focus on the States.

Super M is already pretty global – while Taemin, Baekhyun, Kai and Taeyong are Korean, Lucas is from Hong Kong, Ten is from Thailand, and Mark is Canadian.

Barnett said: ‘SuperM is uniquely positioned to become the highest-profile U.S. debut of a K-pop group in the history of this phenomenon.’

At the event, a teaser video showed the group wearing shirts and harnesses beneath the message ‘We Are The Future’.

While Super M is being eyed up as a huge K-pop success, the band members will still be working with their original bands, so EXO, SHINee, NCT 127 and Way V fans needn’t worry.

Chris Lee told Billboard: ‘We keep describing them as “Avengers” because I think that’s the best conceptual analogy that will immediately be understood by others.

‘Each Avenger has their own group and Iron Man has his own movie and Thor has his own but together they have an even greater synergy, so like that the members will pursue their own careers and own groups but also join together with synergy, a positive one.’

Super M have already been given their own website, Instagram and Twitter accounts, with 74,000 people following the band on Instagram despite their only uploads spelling out their names.
