A man who was stopped by a State Transport Police trooper around noon Wednesday on Pleasantburg Drive was killed when a driver passing in the other direction struck the trooper's vehicle and knocked the man who was stopped into the path of another car, according to the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

The Greenville County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Nathaniel Hawthorne Jr., 49, of Piedmont.

The trooper, identified by the state Department of Public Safety as Cpl. Joseph Hand, sustained injuries and was transported for medical care but is expected to recover, Lt. Ryan Flood of the Sheriff's Office said in an emailed press release.

The driver of the car that struck the trooper's vehicle, Allan Lindsey Zack, "bailed on foot," Flood said, before he was captured a short time later by the state Highway Patrol.

Zack, 34, is facing several charges, including felony DUI resulting in death, according to the Sheriff's Office and online records from the Greenville County Detention Center.

Zack remained in the hospital Wednesday night for treatment of injuries sustained in the wreck.

The Greenville Police Department closed Pleasantburg Drive from East North Street to Century Drive Wednesday afternoon as emergency personnel tended to the scene.

A press release from the Department of Public Safety said Hand, a 21-year veteran of the department, was conducting a routine traffic stop of a commercial motor vehicle when the accident happened.

A State Transport Police vehicle was involved in a fatal traffic collision Wednesday afternoon on Pleasantburg Drive.

Deputies received a call about the wreck at North Pleasantburg Drive and North Garden Circle at about 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Flood said. Flood said the officer who initiated the traffic stop was inside of his patrol car at the time of the collision while the driver of the car he had stopped was standing outside of the officer’s passenger door, next to the Transport Police car.

The impact from the collision caused by the passing driver knocked the victim into a lane of travel where he was subsequently struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Pleasantburg Drive, Flood said.
