With starting cornerback Tramaine Brock Sr. dealing with a shoulder injury suffered during Sunday’s victory over the Bengals, the Cardinals on Tuesday claimed cornerback Trevor Williams off waivers from the Chargers.

Williams, 26, entered the league with the Chargers in 2016 as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Penn State. He’s appeared in 37 games (27 starts) over the last three seasons and has totaled 100 tackles with three interceptions and 23 passes defensed to go along with one forced fumble and four tackles for loss.

To make room on the roster, the Cardinals released punter Ryan Winslow, who had been filling in while Andy Lee recovers from a hip flexor. The team also announced it has re-signed running back Justin Davis to the practice squad.

Arizona Cardinals punter Ryan Winslow (2) punts during training camp at State Farm Stadium July 31, 2019.

Williams’ addition gives the Cardinals a cornerback they can throw into the starting lineup this Sunday against the visiting Falcons should Brock be unable to play. Arizona was already thin at the position, having been without its two projected starters in Patrick Peterson (suspension) and Robert Alford (broken leg).

Peterson will return in another week after sitting out his sixth game of his six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy regarding performance-enhancing drugs. Alford could be ready to return to practice sometime after Week 9.

Rookie Byron Murphy, the team’s second-round pick out of Washington, has been starting at cornerback alongside Brock in the absence of both Peterson and Alford. Chris Jones and Kevin Peterson have been the primary backups.
